What were the best 3 things you packed for your stay in hospital for your hysterectomy, whether it was just overnight or for a few days? We have had a few threads for this over the last 4 years but they always slip down, so I thought we could start a new one! One of the scary things about being diagnosed with cancer is the feeling of not being in control - focussing on what to pack, and buying in items if needed, can be a helpful thing to focus on as we do have control over it!
For me, my best 3 things were my own pillow, my own snacks and squash, and an extra long charging lead for my iPad as hospital plug sockets are usually way behind the bed!
I was only in overnight - my op wasn’t till early afternoon and my catheter was in overnight - but as soon as it was out (6am) I was up out of bed and didn’t go back to it - sat instead in the comfy chair by the window in the ward or walked around.
My 3 things
1. Sturdy slippers or slip on shoes so you can easily get up and walk about. I had open hysterectomy so was in for 3 days but as soon as I could I had the catheter out and was walking around. This helps with so many things but also helps to get your bowels moving.
2. Noise cancelling headphones . I was in for 3 nights and the only way I could sleep so was cancel out the noise
3. Lip balm , lips got very dry
I also drank lots of peppermint tea and did walk a lot as suffered initial from trapped wind but hospital supplied that.
I specifically bought some slippers with a solid sole so that I wouldn’t slip on the hard floors. I wore them all morning on the day of my op as I had to get changed into a gown right away, and then again on the day after my op.
Yes to the slip ones. After hysterectomy feet looked a long way away!
I’d had my last main meal lunchtime the day before, and only yogurt and fruit the night before, so I was quite peckish but post op I couldn’t face the evening meal I’d chosen that morning - not even the banana. My consultant popped in to see me and suggested something light like fruit and jelly - thankfully there were some spare in the ward fridge. So I had a couple of those and then felt able to have a Soreen malt loaf bar I’d brought in with me, and some Skips! I was very glad of those!
When I finally got to my room (I was lucky enough to be taken to the private part of the hospital post op) it was quite late and the nurse asked me if I wanted some toast, she said 'white or brown', I heard 'white or red' and thought 'it is posh here, they have wine' . I was still half asleep
H
Night-shirts or loose jammies bottoms so they didn't annoy my catheter, I came home with mine still in.
Eye mask and ear plugs helped me sleep better
Comfy easy to put on clothes for coming home in
Books and a puzzle book. Remember a pen
Snacks
Blanket from home
I downloaded stuff to watch and brought earphones
Note pad so I could write down questions and things that popped up
Lip balm as my lips got really dry
Anything else that brings you any kind of comfort!
I had a radical hysterectomy and bilateral lymph nodes removal so was in for 5 days
