7 weeks after hysteroscopy biopsy and still waiting on results

Has anyone else experienced a long wait to get their biopsy results? I had a hysteroscopy on 1 October where a large 3cm polyp was removed from my cervix and biopsies taken also from my endometrium.

The reason to have the test was because from December through to August I was having very heavy almost non stop periods, prior to that I hadn't bled for years due to a mirena coil which was removed last September after having it in situ for over 12 years (seems no polyp visible back then) I went to the doctor's in April and was put on HRT to try and alleviate the bleeding.. In August I went back to the Dr as I was so fed up after bleeding through 3 pairs of shorts in one day. I was referred for a vaginal ultrasound. By late August that bleeding had pretty much stopped, I actually felt guilty attending the US appointment! But it came back abnormal due to high vascularity also noted 7mm thickness and 3mm ovarian septated cyst but these did not seem to cause any concern. Gynae booked me in for a hysteroscopy. I'm 51yrs old.

So now I have not had a period for 3 months after 10 months of constant heavy bleeding, a few days before my hysteroscopy I started experiencing period like pains which have been persistent for 6 weeks now, along with bloating and grey spotting and clots with no smell (old blood?) I went back to the Dr on Thursday and asked them to follow up on my results as they could not see anything showing as processed by the hospital in my test results. I had also tried ringing direct but never get an answer, just a voicemail and they haven't returned my calls.

The worst part is the consultant told me the wait for results was 2 weeks!

  • Hi Miss Oracle

I am sorry to hear that you are still waiting for your results after 7 weeks. Was your hysteroscopy done on the 2 week urgent cancer pathway or routine?

7 weeks does seem a long time if it was done on the urgent pathway. There does seem to be quite a variation between hospitals and areas. In my own experience it just depends on how busy the hospital is. My biopsy was done on the urgent pathway and I had results around a week later, however my post op results took around 3 1/2 weeks and that was with me chasing them constantly.

The length of time in my experience does not have any bearing on whether it is good or not so good news- it just seems to be when the pathology lab gets to your sample. Once they have checked the sample then the results normally are processed quickly.

Asking your GP to chase up the results is a good plan. Mine was able to intervene for me.

On your appointment letter for the hysteroscopy is there an email address for the consultants secretary? That is how I managed to get my post op results. I contacted the secretary and the surgeon phoned me later the same day.

I am sorry that you are having to wait so long, I know that it is really frustrating. I hope that you hear very soon. In the meantime if your symptoms/bleeding change or you become concerned then do contact your doctor for advice.

    Jane

  • Yes - it was on the 2 week pathway which is why I'm now pulling my hair out waiting! I had hoped my doctor chasing up would help, they submitted an urgent referral on Monday and still no news... I do have the consultant's details but just can't seem to get any answer on the phone, it is always on voicemail. I am just worried that my biopsies have somehow got lost in the system. I will keep trying the hospital number and keep fingers crossed! Thanks Jane

  • The only other thing would be to consider contacting PALS at the hospital if you don't get a response soon.

  • Little update - I managed to get through to the consultant's secretary today. She checked my file and said it still states 'requested biopsies', so nothing back yet after 7 weeks of waiting. I read elsewhere of results coming in after 2 weeks, so this seems a rather prolonged wait.

  • I waited 8 weeks for my biopsy results so hopefully you will hear soon.

  • It sounds like the pathology lab is really busy and they haven't yet got to your sample. 7 weeks is a long time to wait but there can be a big variation. I hope you hear very soon.

  • Gosh - 8 weeks is a painful wait. I think if the consultant had set a realistic expectation on the waiting time I would be fine rather than saying I would hear in 2 weeks! Hopefully they'll come through next week. I shall just sit tight! Thanks x

  • I was initially told 2-3 weeks, changed in the letter to 14-28  days. I intend to be on the phone Monday, that will be 3 weeks. After 7 weeks I'd be speaking to PALS. As polyps are usually non cancerous your samples may keep getting bumped by something seen as more urgent. But 7 weeks is not acceptable.

  • Please keep chasing your surgery and the consultant's secretary. I had a hysteroscopy with biopsies taken and was told by the consultant results should take 2 or possibly 3 weeks to come back. I still hadn't heard after 3 weeks and when I rang the hospital I was told that my results were back but needed reviewing. I asked my surgery if they could chase it up and a week later still hadn't heard anything, so I rang the hospital again, without any joy. The surgery then had my histology report, which gave me reassuring news but I'm still waiting for notification from the hospital.

I feel for you because it's a nerve wracking time. I hope it's not much longer before you find out something.

  • I will follow up with PALS if no news by the end of the week as then I have been waiting for over 8 weeks for the results. Thanks for the advice!
