Life without ovaries

The consultant has said I shouldn’t go back on HRT after my operation.

I’ve been reading about what happens when your ovaries have gone altogether along with the small amounts of hormones they still produce post-menopause, and would be glad to hear of anyone’s experiences of this.

So far I’m having hot flushes but no mood swings. What about loss of libido? Has anyone who’s come off HRT and had this operation noticed a difference in anything?

  • Hi 1234Eva

I would recommend giving a little time to see how it all affects you. You may find with time, things begin to settle down. If things don't settle then it maybe time to go to your doctor to see whether there is anything that could help. I know that the practice nurse at my surgery can give advice on non hormonal things that may help.

For most ladies after surgery HRT is not recommended in case it could lead to a recurrence. However it is sometimes down to a risk vs benefits decision. Some ladies on here have had more severe effects and are taking HRT. However there are different types and also possible alternatives that may be possible in the future.

A lot can depend on the final post op results and whether the cancer is one that is hormone positive. Other factors can be important too.

I did not particularly notice many hormonal effects after surgery, however I did go straight to chemo so that may have affected things.
