Surgical menopause

So it looks like my surgery will happen in the next 2 weeks and my question is as I’m also having my ovaries removed during my hysterectomy I’m told I will get surgical menopause symptoms. I was lucky not to experience any symptoms during my normal menopause and was wondering how long I will have these symptoms for and how did anyone else feel after they had their own surgery? My surgeon didn’t seem to want me to go down the HRT route. Is anyone taking evening primrose and does it really help? Thanks x

  • It’s normal for those of us with endometrial cancer have everything removed when we have our hysterectomies. I was 62 when I had my op and never had any surgical menopause symptoms at all so I don’t think it’s a given. It’s usually when women haven’t gone through the menopause already I believe!

  • It's 4 weeks since my surgery with everything removed.  I haven't noticed any menopausal symptoms. I'm 72.

    Good luck with your surgery.

  • I went through menopause naturally with loads of symptoms 9 years ago, I wasn’t warned to expect any symptoms following surgery, and haven’t had any, now 6 months post op.

  • Hi

I had the same surgery in April I’m 59 advised no HRT treatment was needed. I did not have any menopause symptoms prior however have been experiencing hot flushes to date.

  • I’m 4 weeks post ovary removal and 39 have experienced hot flushes but that’s about it xxx sending hugs and well wishes xxx

  • Hi

I had my hysterectomy last July at 59, I've had no menopause symptoms.  My daughter in law, who is a GP, told me I won't need HRT.

  • I was well through the menopause with no symptoms and after having had a full hysterectomy three weeks ago have not had any symptoms - and don't really expect any.  Good luck x

  • Hi Pookieboo, I'm waiting for my full hysterectomy following Womb cancer diagnosis

It should be within the next few weeks. I wanted to ask you as i'm 46 years old and the majority of ladies on here are older. I see your 39 and wanted to ask you about your experience. Many Thanks Binifer Slight smile

  • I’m in the same boat just diagnosed and Op in next 2 weeks and I’m only 41, so haven’t started any menopause yet. I’m terrried.

  • Hi Meenamoo, I really feel for you its a very surreal experience and I know my head is swirling around overthinking and trying to 2nd guess everything....Its exhausting! I'm worried about surgical menopause and what that will look like going forward but i think the best thing is to try and take each day as it comes x
