Good morning, i had an endometrial biopsy back in January results came back showing no signs of cancer and womb lining thin as also a tvs was done. The gynaecologist said no further appointments were needed.. this weekend after being at toilet smears of blood again.. what could this be?
I did say to her at a previous appointment how long for the coil to stay in and she says for another 2 years then needs removing, maybe worth saying to her that it maybe needing replacing. As it was first put it due to heavy periods and thickened lining. Thank for your reply.
Hi, Just googled on the official Mirena website and found something that might help you:
1. The Mirena can stay in place for up to 8 years for contraception.
2. For heavy periods, it's recommended to be removed after 5 years....
On that basis, yours should be removed now really, as it's been in for 5 years. It sounds as if someone is mixing up removal times - and you can go on the official Mirena site to read yourself to be sure. Good luck!
Hi 50's lady
Is there another doctor you can seek advice from?
-I would be asking whether after 5 years, it should be changed.
-Also is it worth trying without the coil to see if the bleeding settles and all.
This link says that hormonal effects are uncommon as the drug does not get into the blood stream and if they occur it is normally at the start of use and then settles.
Intrauterine System (IUS): Effectiveness and Side-Effects
This link says when used for heavy bleeding it is recommended for 5 years.

It does not sit right with me that this is something you should just be putting up with.
You could give the Support Line a call and see if the nurses have any advice re mirena
