Pre op drinks

Just had my pre op assessment at hospital , the nurse wasn’t very experienced and didn’t explain things very clearly . My notes didn’t include having pre op drink bottles but she checked with her supervisor and came back and says I would need them . I’m slightly confused as I have to drink 4 bottles the day before surgery and 2 before 6 am on actual day but at same time told not even sips of water from midnight . Any advice appreciated

  • Hi

I had to do exactly the same. These are designed to give you a boost to go through the surgery after not having food-it’s a carbohydrate drink.

They were part of my hospital’s enhanced recovery programme. Mine were Lemon flavoured called Nutricia Pre Op drinks in 200ml bottles. 4 the evening before and 2 early in the morning of admission. I wasn’t aware of them until my pre op appointment. I chilled them in the fridge.

  • Thank you Sarah ,  that’s helpful , there were lots of things at the pre op I didn’t know  eg stop vitamins 2 weeks before ( useful as surgery is only one week away!!  )

  • My pre ops (I’ve had 4 of them) have been like being on a conveyor belt at a clinic doing them for all kinds of surgeries so I never found out much at them.

Hope all goes well with your surgery!

  • I had pre op drinks but was also allowed to drink water until 6am on the day of my op (had to be at the hospital by 7.30am)

  • Oh this is different. I wonder what the reason is for some being offered these and not everyone? My admission time is 11.30am but I can’t eat anything from 5.30am, so effectively the night before is my last meal. I probably won’t eat for 24 hours. Is that okay?

  • Good luck for your surgery, I think different hospitals do different things. I am in this Thursday (6th) 7.30am  so nothing to eat or drink from midnight except these pre op drinks.  Sending positive vibes

  • Sparky55, if you’re unsure I’d suggest checking with your CNS. My last main meal was lunchtime the day before my op, as i wanted my bowel to have cleared that night by me having a poo that evening (it wasn’t asked of me but I wanted to do that) and I then just had fruit and yogurt in the evening. I then had a pre op drink after that and one in the morning before I left home at 6.30am.
