Was anyone told on the day of hysteroscopy it didn’t look suspicious, only to receive biopsy results to say it’s cancer?

Interested to know if anyone experienced this. On day of hysteroscopy ‘Hysteroscopy was performed and this revealed good views. Both tubal were clearly visualised. The
endometrial cavity looked normal, however it appears that the anterior and posterior wall to be thickened as
well as a small endocervical polyp was noted. A directed biopsy was performed and polyp removed.
Specimens were sent for histology.’

i was told it didn’t look suspicious and biopsy results 4-6weeks. Was anyone else told this only to find the biopsy results came back as cancer?

it’s two weeks since hysteroscopy, so potentially another 2-4 weeks for results.

  • Hi Foxtrot Kilo

The waiting for the results is really tough. I hope they come back quickly and provide some reassurance for you.

It sounds promising that the person doing the hysteroscopy didn't feel anything looked suspicious. It sounds as though they had a thorough look and it was only the polyp and the hyperplasia (thickened lining) that were picked up on.

However it is only the biopsy results that will be able to say for sure.

I will pop a link here that will help explain the hyperplasia.

  • Hello,  I appreciate you posted this 6 days ago and might have your answer, but I was the same as you.   When I first went to the GP about post-menopause bleeds, she said it was probably nothing.  I saw a consultant, they said it was probably nothing but they'd do a hysteroscopy.  That was done and the surgeon said they removed a polyp but it was unlikely to be cancer.  Two weeks later I had a phone call to say it was cancer.

Although the polyp might look normal to the surgeon, it isn't until it's under a microscope that they can really tell.

I hope that yours is benign and you can move on.

  • Thank you for replying, it’s useful to know. Though I’m sure in most cases they get it right. I haven’t heard back yet, the MDT at my hospital takes place on a Thursday and with the Christmas break, maybe another week or two before I find out.

Have you been told the stage and grade of cancer yet?

  • In my case the nurse doing the hysteroscopy thought I had a polyp but I was later told that they had found cancerous cells in the womb lining. Not sure to this day whether the polyp is actually cancerous or not but in any event they found cancer in the lining, so now I am undergoing treatment. I was advised that there are times when the polyp may be benign but they find that the lining has malignancy and things can co-exist.  In your case, I hope they find that the polyp is benign but you never know until the lab gets the results back. The waiting is the worst thing so I hope they come back to you soon.

  • Hi Foxtrot Kilo

I hope you are OK? Did you get your results? I'm in a similar position to you in that both the nurse who did the hysteroscopy and consultant who removed the polyps said it all looks ok but only the biopsy will tell. That was only this week so potentially still a couple of weeks to wait. I hope you had a positive (ie non cancerous result)
