  • Hi,

I had my hysterectomy 7 years ago now with no other treatment.  Almost immediately I noticed I had a swelling between my legs, but was told it was just fat!!!  I was pretty sure it was lymphedema. Over the years the swelling went into my left leg and I finally went to see about it about 2 years ago. I was given compression stockings to wear. My doctor told me to keep the leg up in the evenings, and I've found it goes down overnight. I've also read that walking helps to pump the lymph back up. I've just learnt to live with my fat leg, and always wear the stocking.

My grand daughter (aged 8) always nags me to get the leg up, and when I voiced concerns about wearing the stocking in the summer she said' Well, just pretend its not a stocking but sun tan'. That made me laugh!!! Good luck,

  • Hi,

I developed Lymphadema in my left leg 2 years ago, 18 months after hysterectomy. It was a distressing time waiting for an appointment with the Lymphadema clinic but once I was prescribed the compression stocking the swelling went down after about a week of wearing them.

Fortunately I have not had any further flare ups and now manage the condition with walking daily, swimming twice a week and being mindful of possible triggers ( e.g. heat, insect bites, dry skin). I wear the stocking when I am likely  to be sitting for long periods e.g. travelling, theatre trips etc.

I know this might not be the same outcome for all, and indeed may change for me in the future, but I wanted to post a positive note.
