3 /1/2 weeks after hysterectomy I stared bleeding bright red blood. Enough to have to change towels a couple of times a day. As it was getting heavier I phoned surgeon helpline who said to make an appointment with GP (which would take a long time) - it then got heavier so went to A&E - they said it could be leaking vein/artery post surgury with combination of blood thinners. So went home and had a shower and clots started coming out. I messaged the nurse who just said rest. This morning I have large clots coming out and dark red blood. I’m a little worried but no one else seems to be - am I being neurotic? It does say if you have clots go to A & E as with bleeding - but it must. A a certain amount / quantity? This is all quite hard to navigate. Anyone else had this?
Oh goodness!! I am so very sorry to hear this!! I am only half a week behind you in post op from a radical hysterectomy. I also have had bleeding but not to that extent, I am also having the most horrendous abdominal pains and I ended up in A&E two days ago. I went back to the ward where my hysterectomy was performed and saw a gynaecologist. They seemed very concerned but also very much go home and see if the symptoms continue, and then come back. Did they give you a telephone number that you could phone that just takes you to Gynae? So that you don't have to go to A&E. I don't have a GP near me as I've travelled to be treated by doctors in Oxford so my only option is to go to A&E . Have you telephoned your oncology nurse? They often have an oncology triage on the phone as well which might help you.nurse?
You must be so distressed by this and I'm so sorry I haven't got any more information to give you. I think I would start making phone calls to see if someone can give you some information on the phone or even try the NHS111 on the app and see if that helps you.
Take good care and I hope you get through this quickly and safely.
Biggest hug! X

Thanks for reply - yes it is worrying. But I feel like a nuisance You do as they say, if it bleeds a lot go in, if there are clots etc … but they send you home. They did check bloods and for infection. I guess as medical stuff is all new to me you wonder how many clots constitute worry - am I worrying about a few.. My Surgury was done in London (I’m in Jersey) so any triage is by phone and they said to see GP. I have a nurse contact here but she’s off for a bit - I start chemo next week and I think they set up a better support next work once you’re in that system… thank god for medical canabis!
Rachart, I’d recommend phoning the ward where you had your op. That’s what I was told to do post op if I had any concerns.
Hi Rachart,
Large clots and dark red blood needs assessing and it has got heavier than yesterday and you have rested over night. You are not being neurotic.
I would be phoning either your hospital (have you a number for the ward) or NHS111.
Have you an NHS urgent care near you? It could be an alternative to A+E.
I think you need assessing this morning.
Let us know how you get on.
Jane
