Hi,
Just wondering if anyone else has had a lot of sickness post op. I had my robotic surgery last Friday 26th January but am sick every morning that I get up and move about and was very sick in the hospital hence being in 4 days.. I rang my GP but they were not even interested in speaking with me and told me to contact the hospital. I rang my CNS who arranged for someone to call me from the ward I was on and they advised just to eat something small every hour or so like a piece of toast, couple of biscuits, piece of fruit, anything to get calories into me. Bit worried its not a proper diet and was sick again this morning. It may be due to my menniere's disease as my balance was probably upset by being tipped backwards for the surgery but since last Friday I have lost around 10lb through not eating and being sick, not that I am complaining!!, but feel quite weak and keep sleeping. Hopefully it will be better soon?
I have an appointment next week on the 7th Feb to get my post op results so can discuss it with the consultant then but wondered if it affected anyone else this way.
I was given anti sickness medication to bring home, I was not actually sick, but felt very sick and didn't want to eat in the hospital (but I did have very low blood pressure after the GA so put it down to that). It did not continue once I had been home a few days. I hope they are able to help you as that sounds horrendous.
Hi B74, Yes I have had low blood pressure too, Maybe once I am settled back home for a few days I will feel better. I seem better in the afternoon and evenings.
The hospital ward I was on was refusing admissions as they had no beds and as soon as I was able to eat two small crackers and a little finger of cheese they discharged me but that was all I had eaten in 4 days. I only left with the blood thinning injections, no anti sickness or anything and wasn't given any advice either.
Hi Poppy58
I really feel for you - it sounds miserable.
I didn't get this symptom but I have had frequent nausea during radiotherapy.
You say the mornings are worst but the afternoons are better? Perhaps focus on small bits of food from lunchtime onwards. Most important to keep your fluids up.
Things that work for me when I feel very nauseous are ginger nut biscuits, bananas and full fat jelly - not the diet type. Sometimes when I've felt really bad - flat lucozade - at least that gives you glucose.
I'm sorry to hear you have Menieres and that could be a reason for the exacerbation? I have had inner ear infections in the past where you can't sit up and keep vomiting so you have my absolute sympathy here. I hope you have some antisickness medication. If not I would get back on the phone to the GP for some.
Sending best wishes for your recovery
Thanks KT89, I have my normal menniere's medication but it makes you very drowsy, hence wanting to sleep a lot. I usually take one tablet in the morning and one in the evening every day but can take up to 6 if needs be and over the last few days have been taking 4 a day but its exhausting, hopefully it will settle soon. I will try not eating in the morning tomorrow and wait until later on and see if that helps. Thank you for your tips and good luck with the radiotherapy x
Hi Poppy58
Sorry to hear that you are having some sickness post op.
I didn't have any nausea after the op but I did have a lot through chemo and radiotherapy.
I was given similar advice to you by my CNS and prescribed anti nausea meds.
It does sound like it could also be aggravated by your menniere's disease.
Personally the things that helped me was to eat little amounts and often. To have bland food, white toast, crumpets, dry crackers, rice etc. I stopped anything with caffeine. Rice crispies were a staple part of my diet at the time. I bought some of those very thin ginger biscuits- like you have at Christmas (not sure if they are German) and they helped. I also found sharper drinks helped- so flat lemonade or even sparkling water (left out so the bubbles would disappear) with a slice of lemon in. I found dairy foods hard to have but could have a small amount of lactose free milk with cereal.
For fruit I found small bananas, grapes were ok. I used to make smoothies with tinned peaches, pears etc and sip throughout the day. I did use Complan drinks for a while- but made them with water.
The weakness and feeling like you want to sleep seem normal and I was like that for a week-10 days post op. As long as you can keep your fluids up- if not then you do need to call them.
Another strange thing that helped was when I felt nauseous I used to have a luke warm flannel and put it on the back of my neck and forehead and sometimes it helped with the sicky sensation. And also using small plates. So I wasn't put off by having too much in front of me. I also avoided anything that smelt too strongly. I seemed to tolerate cool foods rather than cooked meals. When I did feel hungry I ate rather than sticking to meal times.
I found if I drank before eating I would feel more nauseous so I would try to eat a bit and leave for 30 m of so and then drink.
Hope this helps a bit and I hope it settles soon for you.
Jane
Thank you Jane, I haven't had any hot food just don't fancy it. I think when they placed sausage and mash in front of me after my Op was the wrong thing and I was violently sick straight after as I was advised to eat something even though I didn't want it !! I am drinking fine but only weak squash and have managed two pieces of jam on toast for tea and a yoghurt so will try and build from there. That's a good idea I have lots of fruit and some milk so could make a banana smoothie tomorrow.
Thank you all for you tips, I hope its just a "blip" and my mennieres settles down again as its usually very well controlled. I'm off to bed now for a rest
Hi Poppy58, I’m shocked they put sausage and mash in front of you! When my surgeon came round to see me post op, he asked me what I’d ordered for my meal - and when I told him (jacket potato and tuna), he said “you shouldn’t be having a heavy meal”. I asked what he advised and he said something light like jelly and fruit. So that’s what I asked the nurse for and she found some in the fridge left over from dinner. I had overnight oats the next morning that I’d brought in myself and then some fruit for lunch, and continued eating only light meals over the next week or two. I’ve had Menieres attacks before so I can empathise. Hope you feel a lot better soon. (Btw I lost 4lb just from having the hysterectomy so some of your 10lb may well be down to that!)
Will do MollySue, the appointment will be changed if the results are not through but they are expecting them to be as there is an MDT meeting in the morning, fingers crossed as I just want to know the outcome asap for work and financially. I know results vary from hospital to hospital, fortunately I have never waited more than 2 weeks. Hope you get yours soon x
