For those of you who’ve already had a hysterectomy, what are the things that you’re especially glad you took? Let’s have suggestions here for what to pack so that newbies coming to the group can get some ideas.
For me, these were the most important things:
- my own pillow (I don’t think I’d have slept at all without it)
- snacks (fruit gums to ease post-op throat, mints, savoury snacks, cake/cereal bars)
- iPad and extra long charging lead
- my favourite fruit squash
I even took my breakfast in - overnight oats and sultanas in a screw top Tupperware. I added water from my jug at bedtime and by the morning it was all softened and ready! Soreen bars and Quavers got me through the evening as I didn’t fancy a meal, plus fruit and jelly from the ward fridge!
Blanket
Hot water bottle
Fan
Book/audiobooks
An activity you find relaxing like a puzzle book, colouring, knitting etc.
Powerbank and charging cables for any electronics you take with you
New toiletries - something that smells nice and feels like a bit of a pamper
Nighties, underwear, dressing gown, slippers. Anything that goes around your waist should be a little bit too big
One thing I did that cheered me up was to tuck into my bag one of those scented sachets that people have to make their drawers smell nice. Such a small thing but it meant that when I opened my bag I was greeted by a beautiful relaxing smell
Your own pillow. Snacks. Lots of podcasts/ tv downloaded.
Eyemask and ear plugs.
squash.
nighties.
layers of clothes for those menopausal hot flushes.
Visitors! I don’t know what I would have done without company.
Hope it all goes well x
I’ve packed 3 men’s nightshirts from Amazon in brushed cotton XL (and they are the COMFIEST things I’ve ever bought - lovely and roomy); my favourite long cardi instead of a dressing gown; my fav Dr Marten mules; disposable paper pants, XXL wipes which are more practical than the usual small ones, and some nappy bags, I-Pad, mobile phone; earphones, chargers; a couple of sachets of my fav coffee; bag of sweets and a packet of biscuits; the usual toiletries; a hysterectomy cushion (that protects your tummy when in the car and being greeted by pets when home); a couple of small bottles of water; dry shampoo, ear plugs, painkillers, notepad/sketchbook and pen.
Best thing I had was an extra long phone charger- meant I could keep it plugged in all the time!
