Hi everyone, I didn’t know where to post and I hope you can help me. My older sister who is 44 has had terrible heavy heavy periods for the last 3 years. Periods which she is stuck to the loo the first couple of days as she describes it like a tap. So she had an ultrasound last week and they found one side of the uterus thickened, plus massive fibroids, polyps, and Adenomyosis. They seemed worried and now she’s been fast tracked For a hysterescopy. When she has they hysterescopy will they know if it’s cancer or not or so they find out after biopsy?

  • Hello JazAme

Welcome to the online community and you are very welcome to post here.

I am sorry to see that your older sister has had problems with her periods and that they have found some areas of concern. It is usual where there is a concern to be referred for a hysteroscopy in these circumstances to investigate further.

When they do the hysteroscopy they usually look inside with a tiny camera at the lining of the womb. It can show more detail than an ultrasound. It also enables the doctor to take a biopsy. Once the biopsy is taken then it needs to be sent to the lab who will be able to say whether there is cancer present or hopefully whether they can rule it out.

Hopefully your sister will not have to wait too long for the hysteroscopy. When I had mine the nurse who did it for me phoned me at home before and talked through the procedure and gave me a chance to ask any questions. Although it was a bit uncomfortable I was glad to get it out of the way so I would know for sure and then know what would be happening next.

I have put a link here about the test in case you may feel it is helpful.

I hope that your sister's hysteroscopy goes as well as possible and please feel free to ask if you or her have any further questions. There are lots of lovely ladies on here who have been through these tests and will understand how worrying they can be.

  • Hi JazAme

Sorry to hear about your sister but hope the 2WW fast track now brings her answers and resolutions.

I've just had my hysteroscopy. The consultant hold me what was observed immediately after, while still at the hospital. But the full findings need to await the histology report from biopsy, so my consultant will be back in touch in a couple of weeks with the cancer yes/no answer.
