Hi all A month ago I went for a routine smear and the nurse raised concerns during my appointment about my cervix seeming very friable. She asked me to come back to see a doctor and I was referred on 2 week pathway for a colposcopy. At that appointment my consultant said she wasn’t too worried about my cervix but could see my womb lining was thickened. I stupidly hadn’t realised the symptoms over last 18 months of watery discharge (had been self treating with Canesten etc) and PMB (just thought I hadn’t got my HRT doses right) and lower back pain (thought slipped disc so had seen physio for exercises).
my smear results came back HPV negative so the focus is now on my womb.
My Hysteroscopy under general anaesthetic is tomorrow - it’s been a month of waiting that has seemed forever.
I’m just wondering - am I likely to be told anything tomorrow or will I not know anything until biopsy results come back? Also, I bled very heavily for 2 weeks after just my smear so am presuming bleeding may be worse after a Hysteroscopy?
Reading posts on this site have been so helpful over this last month, so grateful for everyone sharing their experiences.
Hi Ajay, welcome to the group, and I feel for you as the waiting definitely increases the stress. I had a hysteroscopy in October under general anaesthetic, following a failed attempt with just local. All I was told afterwards was that the surgeon had removed a tiny polyp that was just above my cervix, as well as him doing the uterus lining biopsy, and that I’d get the results via a phone call in two weeks’ time. I had very little bleeding afterwards and I think I only used pads that same day (a panty liner was sufficient),
Thank you so much Marmitefan59 - that’s helpfuo
to know.
Hi Ajay100, I have had 2 hysteroscopies, both with general anaesthetic. I don't recall bleeding after the first one but I did have a big one-off bleed the morning after the second one, so be prepared! I got out of bed for a wee and... wow, what happened there? I also had a bad headache that time, but there are any number of reasons why the headache could have happened. After a few hours I was much better. Have you ever had a general anaesthetic before? I have been not-quite-with-it for a couple of days afterwards so I don't do mentally-demanding things during that time, like making important financial decisions. Anyway, this is not to alarm you, just to give you my experience. Good luck with it all. LR.
Hi Ajay
It's horrible having to wait for appointments and results, this just helps to push up our anxiety levels.
In my case I had been spotting very slightly for a couple of weeks before being referred by my GP on a 2 week cancer pathway. I was told by the person who did my hysteroscopy to go away on holiday the following week and when I returned my results would be at home awaiting me. I think she must of thought that everything looked fine when she took the sample from the fibroid. However, 6 days later she telephoned me to ask me to come back up the hospital to see her the following day. This was when I was told I had cancer and my holiday abroad should be cancelled. I was given some medication at the time to stop the bleeding which was helpful, I continued to take this right up until my hysterectomy.
All the best for tomorrow, let us know how you get on.
Big hugs Robin x
Thank you Little Runner - that’s useful to know, and must have been a bit scary for you at the time. I’ve had generals when having emergency c-sections and have been ok. Booked my car into the garage on Friday and thinking now that was a mistake as probably won’t want to be driving/hanging around a dirty garage for an hour! Thank you.
Thank you Robin27 - you have certainly been on a difficult rollercoaster this year.
It’s so kind of you to take the time to reply. I feel a bit in awe of how much the women on this site have coped with and still managing to give kind words and wishes to others.
I will update after tomorrow when I know a bit more.
thank you
Hope it all goes ok Ajay100 I remember you from the cervical group!

Hi Ajay100 I hope you hear something soon. When I had my TV scan she said she saw a fibroid. When I had my first hysteroscopy awake he said he saw 'nothing untoward'. However, I needed to go back and have another under GA as they said the sample from the first one was insufficient, and when I came round afterwards the surgeon said she saw an abnormal mass, I said should I be worried (thinking maybe it was the fibroid which as it turned out there never was one) and she just said it's not normal! And it was cancer. Regarding bleeding, I didn't bleed much after both hysteroscopies, much like a light period.
Hugs, Lesley xx
Hi Ajay, glad it went okay - if you know on what day your MDT meet, that should give you an idea of when to expect your results.
