How long after finishing treatment do you stop feeling so tired? Been a tough year, diagnosed with stage 3 cancer of the womb  in January, followed by total hysterectomy, then chemo and I finished radiotherapy six weeks ago. Yet I’m still absolutely shattered. Hair eventually growing back, but out of spite it’s come back grey

  • Hi 1962KI

I'm in a similar position to you regarding time frames, I finished Brachy 3 weeks ago and my hair has started to grow back now too.

Thi morning I started a 7 week  "Where Now" course at Maggies within the grounds of our hospital.  There were 10 of us on the course and the majority of them said that they are like us and still very tired. There was a lady who finished her treatment a year ago and she's still extremely fatigued so it seems a pretty common issue.

Next week the topic we are covering is exercise. they said that doing a bit can have a positive effect on your mental health as well as giving us more stamina. I'm not looking forward to it but I will let you know how it goes.

  • Hi Robin

I’ve been to Maggies at Freeman Hospital, Newcastle, it’s such a wonderful place. At least I know now it’s not just me. Good luck with your recovery.

  • Hi Karen, thank you and you too. I suppose we just have to remember that it's going to take time and we need to be kind to ourselves.

    Hi 1962KI and Robin

I was diagnosed in January as well, please see my profile for history. I'm still fatigued. I'd like to get away for a few days but I know I don't have the stamina yet. I've improved my diet and am doing a bit of gardening and walking for exercise. I don't think I'd be able to do my exercise dvds yet, my last chemo session was 09/09/22.

I like the sound of the Maggie's classes, my nearest is Newcastle also but it's a bit of a trek for me, might look into it though. I've started keeping a written log of my goals and daily aims, this helps me feel like I'm not just drifting. I was quite driven pre cancer.

Best wishes to you both for your recovery

  • Hi Sistermoon

You have had a tough time of it so its not surprising that you feel fatigued. It sounds as if you are doing well keeping as active as you can. I'm doing the same, I do as much as I can and try to build on it.

I think that even folks without cancer are feeling wiped out with the everyday worries of making ends meet and with what's going on in the world today all of which can effect mental health. Add cancer to the mix and its no wonder we are struggling a bit

I went to Maggies for a look good feel better class, it was so good. We were given a lovely bag of makeup to take home and the makeup consultants showed us how to apply it. I had no eyebrows at the time so it was helpful learning how to draw them on without looking like Coco the clown lol. I'm going to stay to the relaxation class next week that follows my course. I think its worth looking on line as there are zoom courses that you can do too.

I think your log book idea sounds great by the way.

    Big hugs Robin xxx

  • Hi

It’s been a long year for all of us, I finished my chemo in July and then my radiotherapy on 14 September. Currently working from home, but my boss is pushing me to get back to the office, although just don’t feel ready yet. Definitely going to have to have another word with him. Maggies is brilliant, I did the same makeup course that Robin did, with no hair at all. I did ask them when putting foundation in where I was supposed to stop (lol). Good luck with your recovery xx

  • Hi 1962KI

Your treatment time frames are similar to mine. I think you are doing so well to be working from home in the first place, yes definitely have a word with your boss or HR even if need be.

Yes I had no hair at the time either. I know what you mean with the foundation lol Laughing

  • Hello 1962KI

My chemo finished end of June 2022, then had my brachytherapy in August. Took a much needed holiday in September. I worked my part time admin job for civil service from home throughout my treatments, my choice as needed something else to keep me occupied and focused on other than my condition. I'm now back to working at my workplace, I've just had covid too in the mix, I am too fatigued but I find it is getting better and I can do more than the early days but for me the worst thing is my eyes......I think the chemotherapy treatment has damaged my eyes. They get dry and sore and this is tiring especially in the evening I just want to go to sleep to rest them. The consultant did confirm this is the results of the chemo drugs used as it affects every part of your body. My eyes are not as bad as now and I feel some improvement but it still makes me just want to close them sometimes late afternoon but mostly in the evenings. I use eye drops all the time. Hopefully it will get better for all of us. we have been through so much so now a little patience and kindness to our bodies. Eat healthy and well, some excercise and fresh air will help I'm sure.x

  • Hi Mad

Thanks, I hope your eyes continue to improve. Trying to eat a healthier diet and walking my dog every day to build up my stamina. I’m also a part time civil servant, worked at home during radiotherapy, not quite ready for the office yet. Good luck with your recovery xx
