Hello everyone,

Just wondering whether you’ve  experienced any leg cramp after a total Hysterectomy and BSO?
i had epidural and general anaesthetic.

A few days after my op, I experienced a sharp pain behind my right knee…twice. And now the muscles on my right leg feels stiff. No swelling or numbness though.

Thank you for any information or advice.

Gemma Xx

  • Hi Gemma, I’d phone the ward (where you recovered from your hysterectomy) or my CNS and ask them.

  • Hi Gemma

I agree with MarmiteFan best to ring and check.

I haven't had pain like are explaining but I have recently experianced pain in the top of my right thigh at the front which comes and goes, I have put it down to lymph node sampling as nodes do go to where the intermittent pain is. If it continues I too will call my CSN.

Hope you get some answers to put your mind at rest.

  • Thank you both very much. Woke up this morning and found my right knee a little puffy & warm to the touch so rang my CNS nurse. She advised me to get it checked and to ring my surgery rather than going to A&E. Managed to get an appointment at 2:30pm today Tues 17th May. Will update you later. Xx

  • Hi Gemma I hope you got on OK with your GP this afternoon.

  • Hi Robin, hello everyone,

Thank you for thinking of me.

Here’s an update regarding my right leg, which is a bit long I’m afraid.

Went to see a GP yesterday re my  concerns of a blood clot. She measured both my calves and found that my right is slightly bigger. She asked whether there’s a history of arthritis in the family to which I said yes. At first, she wanted to send me for an X-ray rather than an ultrasound scan because I didn’t tick all the criteria for a scan. After checking with another GP, they’ve decided to send me for a blood test. I asked her if she could put an urgent request. So instead of waiting and booking for a blood test, I went to the hospital’s walk in clinic. Was advised to ring my surgery the next morning for results.
But just after dinner, I had a call from the hospital asking me to come over because the blood test is ‘high’. To cut a long story short, I had an ultrasound scan this morning on my right thigh/leg and no blood clot found which is great news. They don’t know what’s causing the puffiness but they advised me to put my leg higher than my heart for 30 mins 3x a day with a bag of frozen peas on my knee. Also to carry on with the same dose of injections.

They’ve booked me in to come back next Wednesday to monitor my leg.  Hope this help others with the same or similar issue. Thanks for listening.

  • Hi Gemma,

Sorry to hear of your leg problems. I've had discomfort in left thigh front on and off since my surgery in Oct 2020. Initially felt like nerve pain - possibly trapped when in fixed position during op but has faded a bit with time. Worst when too hot and skin blotches sometimes appear. Consultants and doctors seem unconcerned so I try to be too.

Re your symptoms, have they ruled out lymphoedema (assumes you had lymph nodes removed)? if not, it'd be worth asking as sooner this is identified the better an outcome is likely. There are other women in the group who could perhaps explain more, or you can find information from Macmillan leaflet on the subject.

Hope they find cause soon and get things sorted for you as I know how worrying things can be.

    Best, Dx

  • Bless you Gemma. you have really been through it. Rest up and hope it feels better soon

    Hugs Robin xxx
