cancer and diabetes (high sugar levels)

Hi - I've been looking for links between raised blood sugar levels and cancer - I found a few, but they are quite old and I'm not sure if those people will still be around, so I'm asking anew.

I have type 2 diabetes, previously reasonably well controlled with diet, tablets and injections.  Since the cancer diagnosis in May, my sugar levels have risen from single figures to 20+ most days.  I expected a rise, with the increased stress, but not this much!  My DSN has no advice.  My only solution is to fast for a couple of days until the numbers come back down.  Has anyone else encountered this and have any suggestions?

Thanks x

  • Hi Skippy, I'm type 2 diabetic and was diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma at the beginning of June. I also have non alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver. I was admitted to hospital 8 times between September and December last year with internal bleeding. When I went for my pre op before my hysterectomy they obviously took various bloods. I got a call a few days before I was due to go into hospital from the hospital specialist diabetes nurse. She told me that my blood sugar levels were really high and they couldn't operate until they were within normal limits. I had to get them down in the following two weeks. I did fasting and low carbing and got them down and had my surgery. To be honest I know that I was eating too much sugar. I thought I have cirrhosis, I have cancer and I'm diabetic I can't cope with everything so I'll have what I want to eat. After the hysterectomy I was struggling to eat due to pain and I lost over a stone in weight. I had my annual diabetes check last week and my HbA1c was 48 so my diabetes nurse was very happy with me. It might be worth having a go at low carbing and intermittent fasting. Have you had your surgery? I've just seen your profile. My latest bloods show the usual (for me) anaemia. Three times it's suggested that I have myeloma but I don't. I've even been told twice that I have pernicious anaemia but again I don't. Do you mind me asking how your MGUS was discovered? Deb

  • Hi Deb, thanks for your reply.  I have been diabetic for 20+years and have been low-carbing since 2012!  I eat between 25-50g of carbs/day. It was the only way I could get into single figures, despite using metformin, glic, liraglutide, oxempic at various stages.  I'm just really severely insulin resistant.  It's the sudden rise from single figures to 20-25 in recent months which concerns me most.  My hysterectomy was cancelled in August.  Their concern was the state of my heart, rather than bg level.  I spoke to my GP (not a diabetes specialist), who felt my numbers were not overly high!  Waiting for the DSN to get back to me now.

  • Hi It might be an idea to give one of the nurses a call on the Macmillan Support helpline, freephone number shown below. They'll should be able to tell you if there's a link. You could also type the question in the search bar at the top of this page.

    Big hugs, Barb xx
