Oestrogen cream?

Hi ladies,

Not been on here for a few years now which is a very good thing as I've been endometrial cancer free for 4.5 years Fingers crossed

I had grade 1 stage 1a  endometrioid tumour. Treated solely with total hysterectomy with BSO.No ovaries left. Operation done when aged 58 and up till that point had been on combined HRT

I made a  very good recovery from the surgery but plunged off a cliff face into a bad  sudden menopausal  crash. I've stoically got on with life and have a full and active life and am generally healthy and happy and rarely worry about cancer recurrence now..although I never take anything for granted.Rainbow. However, I am still suffering with awful hot flushes that disrupt my life and sleep and frustratingly have never improved over time . Cry.    I  am also  suffering increasingly with vulval and vaginal atrophy with very delicate intimate  skin which is prone to inflammation and  tearing etc at the slightest provocation . Sex is getting very uncomfortable despite using all the approved non hormonal lubes, creams and moisturisers. Yes I've tried em all.

I asked my GP today out of desperation if I could try an antidepressant (SSRI) for the hot flushes and an oestrogen cream for the atrophy.

She's happy to trial me on sertraline for the flushing ( I can get 20 or more flushes a day !!)

But ...she won't prescribe oestrogen cream without a consultant's advice (I've been discharged from hospital follow up for a year now)  .I've asked my various hospital docs in the past about it and the've always either sat on the fence about it or said try other stuff if you can. One said that , now I'm out of the high risk period for recurrence it might be an option. At the time I thought I'd soldier on , but now it's more of a problem for me and I'd like to try the oestrogen cream.

Soo.. I'm asking here, if anyone else  here is either on antidepressant (SSRI) therapy for hot flushes or has been allowed oestrogen cream by their doctor?  Has either made much difference to you please?

Nan x

  • Hi , how lovely to hear from you again. I am sorry I cannot answer your question however I would be very interested to hear about its use and if it helps. I am still under my oncology team because of really frustrating problems but they have been amazing, the hot flushes thankfully yes I still suffer them and temperature regulation can be a nightmare but I touch wood very quickly I haven’t been as effected as I thought. Again because of my being high risk breast cancer because i was only 38 when i had my hysterectomy in 2017 with everything removed I cannot take HRT but I have heard there is some alternatives so I would be interested to hear what the other ladies say.

    1. I also had vaginal atrophy which caused awful itching and affected my continence. My GP prescribed me vagifem which is a tiny pessary which is usually used twice a week. Unfortunately it wasn't effective unless I used it 7 days a week. My GP said that it was safe to do so as it had such a tiny amount of hormone in it. I'd been using it for about a year when I was told that I had leiomyosarcoma (a cancerous fibroid). The gynae doctor said that the vagifem could have had something to do with it. Oddly since my total hysterectomy I haven't had any problems with my continence although I still have the itching. I hope that you get some relief from your symptoms. Deb
