Radiotherapy and nausea

Hello,

I just have 3 treatments of external pelvic  radiotherapy to go. I have tried following the low fibre diet but have so many attacks of severe diarrhoea and most foods seem unappealing to me. I am taking the immodium when I need it.  I also feel sick nearly all the time and have tried various things to no avail. I can hardly even tolerate a cup of tea.  I am so fed up of eating cream colours foods and of feeling unwell nearly all the time. I know the side effects will reduce in a couple of weeks but I’m really struggling right now.  Any advice?

  • Hi sorry to hear you are having horrible side effects.  Mine started after day 3 of the 25 treatments, and I took anti-sickness meds every morning before my treatments which I had asked my GP for before I began, although I know the hospital would have given them to me too, I just wanted to have them ready!  I took Imodium every day too, and just ate what I fancied, nothing spicy and I stopped drinking coffee during treatments.  Not sure if you can get the anti-sickness meds in time now unfortunately, but they definitely helped me.  Thankfully you are nearly at the end of your treatments, hopefully things will settle down in time for you.  I didn't need the anti-sickness meds when treatment ended, but unfortunately 4 years on I am still having some bowel problems.

    Hugs, Lesley xx

Thank you Lesley. I tried two types of anti-sickness tablets but they just gave me a headache and made me feel dizzy and didn’t stop the sickness! Peppermint tea brings momentary relief.

I’m sorry to hear you are still having some problems.

  • Thank you - I already had IBS so it has aggravated that.  It's a shame the anti-sickness meds didn't help you.  I'm not sure what else to suggest, I hope it all settles soon for you.

    xx
