I'm only a few weeks in after diagnosis Grade 3 Endometrial Cancer my surgery booked for 2 weeks today. Full Hysterectomy and I'v always been under the assumptio that if you get cancer ' the weight drops off you '. I put a stone on in lock down and finding it hard to shift again, and I am very surprised to read all your posts about chemo causing weight gain, I don't know yet if I will need chemo or just Radiotherapy and I am trying to lose a bit of weight before my surgery and this info has spurred me on a bit. I am only 5'ft 3^ so any extra weight really shows and it does make me feel really sluggish. I am waiting on a call from the hospital dietition for some guidance as I eat like a bird as it is I only have to look at cake and crisps to pile it on. I get bamboozled by all the diets out there so I just use a small plate and have a little of whatever rather than a big plateful of dinner. So any tips are welcome.......thanks
Hi nannyjanet,
When I was 57 they got me for high cholesterol and told I had to diet. My fat free diet didn't work for the cholesterol levels, but I did lose weight. I was told to look at food labels and not to eat anything with more than 4 % fat content. That cuts out an awful lot of nice food, but you get used to it. In fact I am so used to skimmed milk now that I can't stand even semi skimmed in coffee or tea. Cake and crisps are definitely out.
My daughter put on weight during chemo because she sat around a lot and felt sick if she didn't nibble biscuits. I shouldn't worry about it all until after chemo if you have it. xxxx
thanks i do try to keep active I like to go for longish walks, like you say.. 'wait and see' i will deal with it later if needed, Thanks
Hi nannyjanet. I was always under the assumption that cancer caused weight loss. It's certainly indicative of some types of cancer but not ours. Endometrial cancer is hormone fed apparently. Not sure if chemo causes weight gain, perhaps some ladies who've had it might offer insight.
Obviously the lack of exercise will be a factor. Before my op I regularly walked 5 miles daily at quite a pace. Lockdown meant only 1 hour of walking. After op it took a while to get back to 5 miles and in addition my hubby's hip caused major problems. Had left replaced in 2012 and right one now needs replacing. I'm now back to pre-op weight but accept I'll never go back to what I was 20 years ago. I've only gone up 1 dress size though! When I think of what I ate 30 years ago and didn't put anything on, now I look at a cake and it goes on!
Take care, Barb xx

Hi Nannyjanet, just to add to what Barb said about this one being hormone fed, my consultant told me that when we are overweight oestrogen gets stored in the fat cells under the skin. So being overweight can be a factor. I am about half a stone overweight, but unfortunately I have a very sweet tooth, so cake just mysteriously lands on my plate at least once a day!
Thanks Jigsaw that will explain why they are taking a slice from my Omentum...
I agree with the low fat thingie, when I had gallbladder issues a few years ago I was advised to keep everything under 4g fat so not to trigger the pain. It sure did make me look at food differently and I lost weight as there are very few treats out there so low fat and of course, no butter/cheese etc.
However, please be careful - eating food isn't just about weight, esp when going through chemo etc. It's really hard to get the energy, so I'd say listen to what your body wants/needs and if you want, have something naughty as it can keep your spirits up too! I'd worry about weight later on when you're fighting fit - I bet you still look flipping awesome anyway! :-)
