My letter to GP

Dear Xxxx

Very upset today with my appointment at the clinic with a female doctor - you referred me on the two week fast track system due to suspicion of cancer based in thickening of lining of womb, bleeding and pain after sex, lower abdominal and back pain and heavy pro-longed bleeding

This lady doctor said I don’t know why you are here and I’m sorry there was a mix up we had to put an extra clinic on today so you are not being seen urgently

She spoke to me about my symptoms and was basically telling me it’s just hormones and my osteoarthritis that is causing my pain though also said we need to get to the bottom of this bleeding but it’s most likely just hormonal

She had the nerve to say to my face “YOU DONT HAVE CANCER”I was in tears and said you can’t say that you have carried out NO testing and I have not had a biopsy

I feel like I am being dismissed and will go back into the system basically ignored because of her personal opinion that I don’t have cancer

The doctor did an internal exam herself I was heavily bleeding and she even said if you can manage it I will try to do a biopsy now but she was unable to do one.

I wasn’t happy about her personally attempting a biopsy in her room

I was in tears and said but I’ve been referred urgently and should have had the camera and biopsy today she said I’m sorry I will try to get you seen but it could be many many months due to covid

Is there anything you can do for me to be seen for the camera and biopsy urgently as no doubt she will write in her notes this patient does not have cancer it’s just hormonal and I will be placed at the bottom of the (non urgent) list

I am worried of course due to my ongoing pain and heavy bleeding. It’s been a long two week wait I’ve been ever so worried but now I’ve seen this doctor I feel far worse because I know personal opinions are dangerous simply telling a patient they don’t have cancer without any testing

Thank you

xxxx

  • Oh my goodness, unbelievable attitude. If you have been referred under a 2 week rule appointment you should have had the tests you were expecting after all this is what your paperwork tells you will happen. Hopefully your GP should be able to get you back to the hospital to see someone else quickly. It is bad enough having to wait for these appointments without having to deal with something like this.

I wish you all the very best and am sending your a big hug.  xx

  • Hi . That is shocking and I hope you report that Doctor to your NHS trust. To be told you don't have cancer without having tests done is beyond the pale. I hope your GP will take up with the trust and make a formal complaint. In my own experience, the NHS have been brilliant but when I talk to my brother-in-law about his wife's treatment they could be on another planet, not just a different county. I'd phone your GP first thing Monday for reassurance your 2 week wait pathway will be adhered to.

Sending you big hugs, Barb xx

Yes I was shocked when the doctor said to my face I don’t have cancer based on reviewing scans and having a chat to me. She was calm and said you are peri menopausal and your pain is arthritic I was really shocked

  • Hi Bellman, could you ask your GP to refer you to a different specialist, or even a different hospital?

For sure I will ask. I will speak to my GP next week. I have sent her an email I hope she is as horrified as I was.

  • Hi there always push for treatment if u think   something is wrong I do now my gp kept dismissing me I would go to the women’s hospital and sit in the a an e for hours because of the bleeping they kept says it was my periods gave me more medication to stop the bleeding. I remember crying my eyes out y wouldn’t they believe this was not normal for me!! Then finally a lovely man gp was brilliant and he listend sent me for a scan then the rest followed!!! After treatment i complained to the doctors and hospital I got and apology but for me I didn’t want that I want them to listen tO other women in my situation and believe them!! Imagine we’re I would be if I left it the thought is awful so I lost all trust in the doctors even now when I go I will only see that man who believed me xxxx

It’s awful to be dismissed isn’t it I feel your frustration. The two GP’s I saw in my own surgery were fantastic they acted quickly. Within 10 days I had a ultra sound scan the lady told me to ring my GP first thing on Monday to get me referred urgently. My GP immediately referred me on the two week fast track system. My problems have occurred with the female consultant in the hospital who clearly never intended on carrying out the tests on the day I was booked in for them. She actually said no idea why you have been referred you simply are hormonal and your pain is arthritic I was gobsmacked

when she said to me you don’t have cancer I did say to her face you can’t say that only a biopsy can confirm for sure. I started crying and only then did she say I will try to get you booked in but you could have a very long wait with covid

I said I was booked in for today so she must have cancelled me and assumed I would be ok with her telling me I don’t have cancer

  • Yes it’s awful u just want them to listen has your local hospital got a complaints department I would contact them they can get u seen to faster this happend to me the hospital lost my referral for biopsy and I contact the complainants I got appointment for the next day wishing you luck xxx

I’m hoping my GP can write a letter and make a complaint directly. No idea why a consultant takes great satisfaction about changing an urgent referral based on an opinion with no testing. They could risk getting sued by a family

  • Yes truly awful what hospital was that?x
