Hysterectomy Cancelled

Was due to have a hysterectomy tomorrow for endometrial cancer. This was cancelled today and no new date could be given.  It has been a month since I was diagnosed after the usual tests.  I understand COVID19 means the NHS is under stress but can they delay cancer surgeries indefinitely?  I am so worried.  I hope this does not come across as selfish.

Hi Shell. Just doing some late night stressing and picked this up. I am one of many with a medina cool fitted and a long indefinite wait for a hysterectomy. I’ve had 2 spinal blocks with c sections and it’s scary but ok. I felt only tugging and pulling and the odd scraping sound but the staff try to distract you. I would be interested to see how you get on with a spinal block op, I’m likely to need the full c section cut due to scaring but was told that being fully under anaesthetic would be too dodgy at the moment, so interested to see if you are able to go ahead. I’m in East Anglia. Which part of the world are you as different trusts have their own ideas? I just want to have surgery and move forward !

  • Hi Fernwalker I am In the  west midlands. I am quite nervous about having a spinal block. Depending on my mri results determins which hospital I go to. If its 1a I go to a private hospital which is helping the nhs out or 1b and I go to the Queen Elizabeth in birmingham. And laprascopic surgery is not an option. Bloody scary times.....get my results thursday. When do you think you will have your surgery?

Hi Sell. I was told at diagnosis that I would probably be waiting 4 -6months at least, so anything is an improvement on that. Not that reassuring to also be told that the merina coil would last for up to 5 years! I think I am on Rapid Access Route, but I'm not sure what difference that would make. There's loads of cancer folk out there with far worse diagnosis and desperate for surgery and the generous me says let them go first. The mean part disagrees! I've had a look at the NHS guidance of treatment priority and it seems stage 1a is survival 90% so priority, whereas cases that can be delayed 10-12 weeks with no extreme effects are lowest. So who knows?

Anyone got any ideas or thoughts around this?

  • Hi Shell and Fenwalker,

Even in 'normal' times things don't go to plan!

I had my date for hysterectomy, but was rung up 2 weeks early for a pre med on a Friday, to have the operation the following Tuesday.! I had no nightie, no bag packed and was in a spin! I spent all day at the hospital on the Friday having a pre med and chest X ray. I arrived home to a telephone call saying my operation had been put back as they had an emergency.

I was cross because I got worked up for nothing, but then pleased that they thought I could wait!!! I was stage !A grade 2 when I eventually got the operation 2 weeks later. Also, I have no idea how long things had been lurking around for before I was diagnosed.!!!

I think they do prioritize, but goodness knows what the virus will do to that. Best of luck to you both. xxxx
