Sickness and fatigue

I had 4th of 6 chemotherapy cycle last Tuesday. I fell asleep during the session and have struggled since more than before. I'd had awful constipation 1st two cycles but no sickness and only slight nausea.

Nurse suggested to take less anti sickness as that was what was causing the constipation. Side effects after 3rd.chemo easier. More fatigue but less pain.

This time I took same amount of anti sickness. Pain in bones was worse so had bit more painkillers ~still only child dose of cocodamol as can't take anything stronger without more side effects.

Couldn't sleep at all Saturday night as teeth really hurt. Went to put toothpaste on~it often helps ~but then was suddenly very sick.

Took 3 hrs but finally got some sleep. But felt sick and exhausted since. Today have just laid in bed, feel sick every time I move. Sent message to my nurse but she just said to take more anti sickness.

Don't want to eat or drink.

Stupid youngest isn't helping as thinks it's fine to put me at risk of infection.

Sorry just feeling sorry for myself.

  • Hi Nina,

I think you have done well to get so far with chemo without much problem. I think it gets harder towards the end, and you are nearly there. My daughter felt sick for the first week each time and found staying in bed helped her. She also found grazing was better than eating 3 meals a day. Keep in touch with your nurse and good luck xxxx

  • Hi  Chemo can be very hard sometimes. I remember feeling very tired by chemo 4. You’ve done well not to have any sickness. Have you tried ginger? Ginger can help with feelings of nausea/sickness - ginger biscuits or ginger tea can be helpful. I agree with NannyAnny - grazing can help too. Small, light meals are better. I found toast was easy to eat and digest when I felt sick, for example. Try to keep well hydrated as that helps to flush out the toxins plus it also helps with the fatigue. I remember the bone pain too - it really wears you down, doesn’t it? I think our medical teams sometimes underestimate the effects treatment has on us psychologically - it’s hard when you’re dealing with chemo on top of all the other stuff life continues to throw at you.  You’ve done 4 so two more to go. Hang in there, Nina. You can do this and we are all here cheering you on x

  • Hi Nina, some great advice from fairycake and NannyAnny. I wonder if you can drink peppermint tea as I find it works very gently on the bowels to hopefully make it more comfortable. Ginger is also very good if you can take it.

  • I have ginger biscuits but I've just not been able to eat anything. I tried both ginger and peppermint tea but I can't take either.

Just keep hoping I've got it sorted and I'll not feel so bad. But yen it goes wrong.

  • If another couple of days doesn't see any improvement I think you need to contact your team to see what to do, and certainly tell them before your next chemo session. You need food to help you fight this. Don't put up with anything. xxx

  • Managed a piece of toast this morning and now having another piece with marmite. Taste buds beginning to return. So had drink of ribena and on second cup of tea.

Hubby had opticians appointment this morning and they're hopeful they can get his sight back to driving standard.

Hi Nina,  I haven't hardly eaten anything since last Wednesday,  not to do with chemo but effusion,  long story. I have found one the best things to help constipation are the little 5ml micra lax enema which you can get from your Doc. Eating wise I found plain crisps quite nice, also cherry yoghurt ( my favourite) ripe banana,  advocado, oh and a nicely browned crumpet ! I also love ginger biscuits and please don't judge me !dunked in cold full fat milk. How about warm Ribena?  Could help move things along ? You have done brilliantly well.

Hope you manage to sort out your tummy,

  • Hi Nina,

Glad to see you've felt like eating today. When my husband lost his taste with radiotherapy on his throat he had little meals, often, rather than normal meals, and I was told to get calories into him. ie. I added cream to everything I could for him, into soups, in mashed potato, etc. He also found that puddings went down easily, again with cream or custard. My daughter put on weight during chemo, but lost it afterwards, so don't worry about weight at the moment.  xxxx
