Urine leakage after hysterectomy

Hello,

I had a total laparoscopic hysterectomy done about a week ago, with a catheter left in overnight after the op. I was told the op went well, and the catheter was removed the morning after. First couple of days after I went home went well but on the morning of day 4, I woke up and as I got up, I felt quite a lot of clear watery fluid coming out of me. This has happened every morning since, and I also get smaller leaks when I get up from the couch, walk around for a bit, etc. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm a bit puzzled about it as the first few days were fine, and after 4 days did the incontinence start. Not sure if it might be a fairly normal reaction to the surgery/catheter, or even hormone levels (I'm under 30 so literally went through menopause overnight), or if it's a sign something in my urinary tract might have been injured during surgery. Nurses I spoke to didn't seem overly concerned, but then I haven't found any similar testimonies anywhere.

I might just be overthinking things!

Thanks!

  • Hi Lolapozo welcome to the forum I dont usually come into this forum but wanted to make sure that you had a reply to maybe help with the worry that you are feeling.

First things first having worked in Continence  services many years ago it is not uncommon to get a Urinary Tract Infection after having had a Urinary Catheter in place so would be worth speaking to the GP and maybe asking them to check your urine for infection.

I dont know enough about the surgery that you have had to answer your query but it might be worth posting this query in the ask a nurse section thought they may be a bit slower than normal with replies with the hols.

It sounds like it is worrying you though and if it was me I would be tempted to get in touch with the GP surgery maybe on Monday and see if someone can see you and at least that might put your mind at rest..

Sending some hugs your way meantime. xxxx

  • Hi Lolapozo,

Sorry you find yourself here and at such a young age. Not sure if your problems are like mine, but I had bladder problems after my hysterectomy. I'll add here that I was 72 at the time, so much older than you.

I had trouble emptying the bladder after my catheter was taken out. I had no feeling at all. They kept me in an extra day to monitor the bladder. I came home on Day 2 and as they said I could have a bath, I did. As I stood up urine flowed out of me uncontrollably. It was a most weird and frightening feeling. That night I was up to the loo every 2 hours, but only passed a thimbleful each time! I think in hindsight my feeling was returning. I was so scared I got my husband to drive me back to hospital to be checked. It was all fine, and they said things were just settling down. I read on the internet that you sometimes have to retrain your bladder after having a catheter. So, I went to the loo by time, as I couldn't feel anything. I also found that if I put a warm facecloth over my bladder that helped the flow. A kind nurse also told me to hold one leg up, then the other to make sure the bladder empties.

It gradually got better, and the more I felt as if I needed to go, the less I had to time myself. I think I was badly bruised, but for the first two weeks I felt as if I was doing nothing, but think about my bladder.

    Hope this helps xxxx

  • Thank you for your reply! Ended up seeing a GP last night and they suspect at least a UTI - got some antibiotics so fingers crossed that's all it is and they do the trick! xx

  • Exactly the same happened to me after the surgery. When I went to the hospital two weeks later they tested my urine and I had an infection so the antibiotics did the trick. I was getting worried as was leaking urine. Hopefully yours will clear up with the medication x

  • Thanks for replying! Looks like that's what it was for me as well, already looking (and feeling) a lot better. It's amazing how much worrying about these things can affect your recovery.

I don't have my follow-up at the hospital until 13th January, will bring it up if it hasn't cleared up by then but seems to be on the right track already.

    Thanks for your support xx
