I am in my early 70s. After some unexpected bleeding in early summer, which was diagnosed as a trapped kidney stone coming free, I had a full check up at my local A& E. This included blood tests, urine tests, kub CT scan and speculum test of vagina. Everything was clear except small amount of blood in vagina and I was sent for transvaginal ultrasound at Gynae Rapid access clinic. This identified two large polyps high up in uterus and thickened endometrium lining. I was recommended the polyps be removed in day surgery and biopsy requested at same time ,(standard practice here.,) The registrar emphasised had seen no abnormalities in the TVU. The procedure was delayed a bit while I got my blood pressure down but I had it at start of last week. The surgeon said it was successful and the biopsy would be sent back to the Gynae department for review by the Multi disciplinary team.
I had a call today from the Gynae clinic saying they had a MDteam meeting this morning and as s resultb the lead consultant has asked me to come in and see him tomorrow. He will be coming over to Gynae after morning clinic to see me. They recommended I bring someone with me. I looked him up and he is their lead Gynae cancer specialist. It does not sound good. Does it? Would advanced cancer have shown up earlier. In the tests, in the TVU or even when removing the polyps? I can face a hysterectomy but the urgency and the need to see the lead man himself and have someone with me is really worrying. Has anyone had a similar experience? What is prognosis for womb cancer?
Hi nightingale (love the name) you seem to have had excellent diagnostic care and the prompt appointment with the consultant although alarmed you shows how efficent the team is. You say all tests preop were all clear including ct scan so there is no reason to believe you have advanced cancer. Most womb cancer is confined to the uterus and a hysterectomy is all the treatment required and the prognosis is very good. So try not to worry too much though i know it is only natural to feel frightened. So one step at a time. Good idea to take someone with you who could be a good support and jot things down.
Thanks for reply. What has worried me is being called in urgently at very short notice to see lead consultant who is going to come over to Gynae department specially to see me. I can't help thinking that if all it takes is a hysterectomy, it would not be so urgent an appointment, and with the top man, and having to take someone with me. The team on the TVU seemed very sure it was just polyps. And I thought the incidence of cancer with polyps was very low..
I understand your concerns but in my experience of cancer in the last few years it really doesnt mean much believe me. These consultants have extremely busy workloads and fit people in if and when they can. I recently had a recurrence of my womb cancer found on routine scan and had same experience emergency appointment but then waited weeks for surgery. Nhs guidlines lay down protocols where cancer is concerned and seeing patients swiftly where cancer is concerned is one of them.
Hi Nightingale,
I Know how it feels to be called in suddenly. After my hysterectomy I was called in early to see the consultant. I was convinced it was bad news. Turns out, she was going away the next day on leave and wanted to see me before she went to tell me I needed no more treatment. After I calmed down I thought she must have really cared to do that. I was looking forward to seeing her at my check up, but got someone else, who seemed to know very little!
Its always a good idea to take someone with you. Sometimes you are in such a state you forget some of the details. And its often a comfort while you wait, I find. Take a pad and notebook to jot anything down.
I believe one member here had cancer in a polyp, Fairycake . She will probably be along soon. Best of luck. xxx
Hi Nightingale,
I was called to come for a next day appointment for my womb biopsy results, I was treated with a hysterectomy only. There's no way of knowing what they are going to tell you, there's generally no pattern to what they do, but try and keep busy until your appointment and take one day at a time.
let us know how you get on tomorrow
lots of love

Hello nightingale19 Welcome, though I'm sorry for the reasons you find yourself here. I agree with the ladies, there is no way of knowing what the gynae team will say to you. I was called in for an early morning appointment with the gynaecologist about 3 weeks after the biopsy and even then I didn't suspect what they'd say, partly, I think, because I'd been given results face to face after previous hysteroscopy procedures, and partly because my GP had reassured me that 90% of polyps are benign and she'd never given me reason to think otherwise.. So, it was a shock to be told they'd found cancer in the polyp they'd removed. They went on to say that I had an aggressive type but I'd stress very strongly that's not an indication it'll be the same for you. After the hysterectomy the histology showed that the cancer had been contained in a polyp and that it hadn't spread into the womb wall, tubes, ovaries, cervix or omentum. In my case it had somehow jumped into a single lymphnode out of the 23 they took for sampling. Again I want to stress this isn't necessarily what will happen to you. If it's found that you have a low stage, low grade cancer, it's highly likely that a hysterectomy will be all you need. I'd always say take someone with you - a second pair of ears is useful. Get that person to take notes of what's said as it's easy to mishear things when you're under stress. Write down all your questions and use the list as a prompt tomorrow. Whatever the outcome tomorrow, we'll be here for you. Meanwhile, gentle hugs are coming your way.
Hello nightingale19, I had a small polyp removed back in June, this was found to contain cancer, grade 1, I then had an MRI which seemed to say stage 1A. I had a full keyhole hysterectomy on August 6th, I am recovering well from this. Following the hysterectomy my cancer was confirmed as stage 1A grade 1 and I needed no further treatment and I am now on the patient initiated follow up. I have to say I was so glad I had my husband with me when I had the diagnosis as it was a shock I was not expecting My one small polyp to be cancerous and am now just glad I followed up my very minor symptoms. I am thinking about you today.
I have just got back. It seems that what were diagnosed as 2 polyps were in fact a tumour which could only be partially removed and a biopsy was taken of it. It is assessed as a Level 3 but they do not know yet what stage the cancer is at. I need a CT scan and an MR scan to give the team an idea of this. Due next week. Fingers crossed. Then I will need a radicall hysterectomy which will done by a laparoscopy and if it has not spread, will be all I need. I should be out in a couple of days. The only thing I am a bit nervous about is if it has spread to my lymph glands. The consultant said they might want to remove them at the same time ,- which can leave you with swollen legs. I would prefer to just have a sample taken initially I think, to see if it needs doing. Interesting that everyone in Gynae dept thought I had polyps.
Hi nightingale,
I hope all goes well with your scans. I didn't have to have any lymph glands taken as the MRI showed them to be fine. While removing my small polyp them found another small one on my cervix but this one was alright, only the one contained the cancer.I was home the next evening following my hysterectomy and have needed no other treatments.
