Good morning
After an urgent referral I have an appointment this Wednesday for usual tests and meeting with gynaecologist at hospital. I am thinking about questions to ask and wonder if anyone can advise me on a particular issue please? With my family history, 30 years of taking Tibolone and having been diagnosed with Bowel cancer 3 years ago, I am statistically st high risk of developing womb cancer. I have been very anxious about this for quite some time so of course the recent post menopausal bleeding (though only one incidence over three days and now stopped) has really got to me! My question is whether anyone in the forum has had ‘preventative ‘ surgery it knows anyone that has? Is this even an option? I fully realise that a hysterectomy is a major operation but I don’t want to live with this anxiety if it can be avoided. Many thanks in anticipation
Hi ,
Your message posted fine ! But I can see you haven't had any replies - I wonder if you might get more information about preventative surgery from the group for Lynch syndrome. I don't know the right way to insert a link so this may not work but if you put lynch in the search box at the top of the page or click on the groups tab you should get there. .

I hope you can find some more information and that your next appointment can reassure you.
ps After I posted my message I tried the link and it does seem to work!

Hello I'm sorry I can't answer your question as I've no relevant experience. It would seem reasonable that patients in your situation might be offered preventive surgery - I know someone who had a very high risk of breast cancer, who was offered (and had) a double mastectomy. The offer came after lots of tests (including genetic testing) investigations and consultations. So maybe you could ask whether there are any tests to be done which might show any genetic mutation or increased risks to yourself or other family members. Sometimes women who have completed their families are offered a hysterectomy as a means of dealing with very heavy periods, but again they usually have tried various ttreatments, had a hysteroscopy (or two!) and maybe other procedures first before the surgery is offered.
As you say ia hysterectomy is major surgery so if it becomes an option you and the doctors will have to work together to decide the risks and benefits for you. It might help to have a chat with the nurses on the helpline - 0808 808 0000 (every day, 8-8) They can't diagnose or be specific about you because they haven't got access to your notes but they will be able to talk things through and perhaps help you clarify what you might want/need to ask when you meet the gynaecologist tomorrow. I hope all goes well. Sending you lots of good wishes x
Many thanks for responding to me Oldlady - having not used the forum previously I thought I’d better check I’d got it right! I do need to discuss Lynch at my meeting tomorrow as there’s far too many cases of Bowel /womb cancer in my paternal side not to be concerned about it...many thanks for the useful link
Many thanks for your very helpful response Fairycake - my mind is off in all directions at the moment as you might imagine - I shall be so pleased when tomorrow is over and I’ll have a bit more info hopefully - I don’t know if they will tell me anything about what the tests show or whether it’s another waiting game!
onwards and upwards!
Thanks again
