Spotting or heavy bleeding?

Hi all,

I've been lurking for a while but now feel brave enough to ask a question.

I'm booked in for an internal scan and hysteroscopy next Friday (28th June). My Gp made an urgent referral after I told her of light spotting I am experiencing on a daily basis for the last 2 months. My last period was 18 months ago so I am definitely postmenopausal. The bleeding also made me wonder about the urinary frequency that has come on over the last month or so. Wondering if it's connected. I have a history of Vulva cancer 10 years ago (carcinoma in situ) and CIN3 20 years ago, so I'm on alert.

My question is - from your experience does the degree of bleeding have any bearing on the severity of endometrial cancer? I.e. light spotting early stage, heavy bleeding later stage?

Also, has anyone had bladder problems with early stage endometrial cancer?

I do realise I don't have a diagnosis yet, and it may be nothing, but I'd be interested to hear your experiences.

Thanks in advance x

  • Hi smully,

ive been around the site for about two years and from what I've read there is no pattern from symptoms to diagnosis, some folk have a little spotting, some folk have heavy bleeding and in both circumstances they could get the all clear, or not. I had really heavy bleeding for a long time and my cancer was early stage and grade.

The only way to know whats happening unfortunately is to get the lab results back after the hysteroscopy.

We are here to wait with you though, the waiting for results is the pits.

    Lots of love

    xxx

Thanks Arla, and for your support. What a lovely bunch of people you are in this group xxx

  • Hi , welcome. I’m so glad you’ve had the courage to come into the open and say hello. It’s good to meet you although I’m sorry for the reasons you find yourself here. I can understand why you’re on high alert given your medical history but please try not to second guess anything. 90% of polyps are benign. I was one of the unlucky 10% for whom that’s not the case. I had some pinkish, watery discharge (so slightly pink I almost convinced myself it wasn’t there) and very light spotting which is when I went to see the GP and found myself on the 2week pathway. The rest is history. That doesn’t mean it will be the same for you - as  has said only a hysteroscopy and biopsy will give a diagnosis. Waiting really is hard but hang in there and bring all your coping strategies into play. Hopefully all will be well. If it is we will celebrate with you, if not then we will be here to support you. There’s usually someone around to chat to and we’re goid at virtual hugs and hand holding too so you certainly won’t be alone while you wait. Take care and please let us know how things go x

Thank you Fairycake, I didn't realise how much it would help just to share on this forum. It's true what they say about a problem shared, he?

I really appreciate your kindness in spite of what you are dealing with.

I will certainly stay in touch and will probably have more questions as the waiting goes on!

Hi smully, I had my hysterectomy seven weeks ago. I'm 59,no prior history of cancer, went through the menopause six years ago. I had endometrial cancer stage 1a, grade 2. They took everything, womb, cervix, tubes, both ovaries and a biopsy of the momentum with abdominal wash.I first noticed a clear discharge had returned back in June 2018,having been dry for ages almost similar to the discharge you get when ovulation that went on for two days. On a couple of occasions this was tinged pale pink when I wiped as though I had caught myself with my nail. This was a monthly occurrence but gradually the discharge changed and was heavier, cream to yellow/green in appearance, sometimes with a slight brown things but not very often. I did wonder what was going on, I felt fine apart from being very tired which had gone on for ages. As I am a carer for my parents, have a disabled son,and work full time I naturally thought it was getting older and the pace of life. However what alarmed me and told me all was not ok was when the discharge suddenly turned into a heavy period like bleed in December which lasted two days so I contacted my doctor who referred me urgently under the 2 week regime. I had failed hysteroscopys because my womb is retroverted and just plain awkward and so I had an MRI which identified a suspicious mass and a CT scan after that. So to answer your query from my point of view bleeding does not make the stage/grade of the cancer worse. The waterworks..well I don't get much warning and the fact that I take diuretics which makes you go even more..I need to go urgently when I need to go. This is obviously increased in frequency for about three hours after I have taken my tablet but whether this is age related or just me or due to the cancer i can't really say. Hope that helps you a bit..other ladies will no doubt be along soon to advise you of their experience and we are, between us, a realm of information on this site, very friendly and no question is too bizarre, silly, shocking or whatever. I thank God daily for this site and the Macmillan workers because quite frankly I would have gone round the bend without it..we tell it like it is and if we cannot answer we direct you to somebody who can. Take care of yourself, God bless, and I'm praying for a good outcome for you..x

  • Hi Smully,

In both my pregnancies I had trouble with miscarriages, so guess I was always on the look out!! Although I was 72 when I was diagnosed my first thought when I saw a pinkish blob was' Not another miscarriage', with a familiar sinking feeling!!! When I had a smear of blood three weeks later I went straight to the doctor. So, I really had very little bleeding, and was diagnosed with Grade 2 stage 1A womb cancer. An operation by keyhole sorted it out, which was far less scarey than I imagined!!!!

I will add that I need the loo far less often than I did, and now rarely have to get up in the night!! I guess there is more room for the bladder to expand!!

    All the best xxxx

  • Hi smully and welcome to this group of lovely ladies, you will never be alone , everyone will help you through any questions or worries etc, my story is more or less exactly as little lamb described, only I was pre menopause and had stopped bleeding for a good two years, I never worried Cos I assumed it was a mixture of my age (48) my polycystic ovaries and peri menopause, it was only when I kept getting microscopic blood in my diebetic urine tests that alarm bells began to ring, I would never have known this blood was there , I also had my hormones checked and I was not in the perimenopause, then I started to get clear discharge which was like little lamb described, like the ovulation type, sometimes I felt like I had wet myself, sometimes it had a slight pink tinge, then one day I actually saw blood myself and this is when things really moved on, like you I could not take the examinations with camera etc Cos I also had the back to front  or tilted uterus, I also had a tight hard  cervix as no kids etc, anyway I ended up with a d and c , this is when they found the cancer and the rest is history I guess, I have seen many ladies who bled heavy yet had low stage and I have seen many with hardly any symptoms that were high stage, there really is no pattern at all, but the main thing is you are in the system and will now get treated, we will all be behind you, good luck Hun and keep us posted xx

Don’t ever give up hope, there are earth Angels all around us and Miracles really do happen xx

    Hi Nannyanny,

Interesting about the bladder isn't it? Did your uterus get bigger with the cancer, from your understanding?

Thanks for your reply,  very helpful xx
