Help needed

I’ve posted my journey so far on another thread but I want to ask a specific question which I’m hoping someone may be able to help with.

I was referred (eventually) under the 2 week fast track after some PMB. My ultrasound showed a thicknened womb lining.

Sent for biopsy where a further scan was undertaken which showed lining to be less thick than the previous scan, biopsy taken and came back as a benign polyp.  I was then sent for a hysteroscopy which showed 2 big polyps and a small one, I am due to have these removed under a general next week but the letter I received a copy of from the doctor who carried out hysteroscopy stated it showed an “atrophic endometrium” having googled that it seems that is a thin womb lining.

I am now confused, the lining was slightly thick (7.6mm) at first scan, 6.8mm at second scan before biopsy but now appears thin? How can this be? Could the polyps (which didn’t show on either ultrasound) have caused the lining to appear thick but the camera actually showed a thin one once the polyps had been discovered?

Any insight would be much appreciated.

  • Hi midsummer madness,

One of the nurses in the 'ask an expert' section of the site should be able to answer your question, they are at: https://community.macmillan.org.uk/cancer_experiences/ask_the_expert/ or you could call the Macmillan helpline and ask to speak with a nurse.

I find it helpful to take a list of questions along to my appointments, you could also ask when you go in for your polyp removal next week.

    lots of love

I will ask next week I was just wondering in the interim.  That link doesn’t work for me unfortunately.  I did ask questions at my two appointments about various things but nothing was answered or explained, I just get sent copies of letters. I’ve not been very impressed so far but guess I’m just unlucky, our hospital is not the best and is always “needing improvement”

ive still not been told why I now have to have a general when I was booked in for an outpatient hysteroscopy to remove the polyps they found..the reason given was the consultant often changes his mind.

Guess they will tell me eventually what I’m dealing with but for now I’m feeling pretty fed up and worrying myself stupid about having a general next week which I don’t want

  • The 'ask an expert' tab is at the top of the page if you want to ask a nurse on the site.

I had my hysteroscopy under general anaesthetic and it was great, i didn't have to be awake for the procedure and I woke up in recovery then slept for a while and went home and had an amazing sleep. I got constipated after it so I'd recommend having something on stand by to help your bowels move, prune juice worked overnight for me. I also took some big pads in with me, I had quite a bit of bleeding afterwards.

You have to consent to your treatment so if you feel strongly about the general anaesthetic you could ask about alternatives.

it hopefully won't be too much longer until you know what's happening, I know it's torturous waiting though, I waited months for a diagnosis too.

    lots of love

I am very sorry that you are not happy with the hospital.

I had same issues with my hospital. I transferred money he care to another hospital.

I had general as well. I was very scared but it was ok.

They will explain to you. They are very experience people and know their stuff. Try to relax and listen to calming  music.

    That helped me a lot

    lots of love

i clicked on the link and it took me to the Ask an expert page but the link to ask the nurse just brings up a blank page, perhaps there is a problem with that particular area..

i know you had to wait a long time for diagnosis and it’s really not acceptable, it all seems to be down to the health authority and/or hospital.  My GP didn’t refer me in January when it first happened, it’s now June and I’m still no nearer knowing..if my BMI had been a little lower I would have been seen at the other hospital and I’m pretty sure i would have had all the tests etc and results weeks ago, they were excellent when I about my knees.

Im about to email the consultants secretary and ask that he rings me when he back from holiday on Tuesday, or she asks the questions and emails me back. She did say it would be up to the consultant if I could have a spinal although I’m not sure if this hospital actually offers them, but as mentioned above if you don’t ask, you don’t get.

ive got the most dreadful sore throat and cough which has just come on since I came back from holiday so not sure they would be able to do a general on Friday anyway unless it clears up by then...one thing after another!

unfortunately my weight has stopped me using the other hospital in the area as my BMI is too high for their admittance policy but I might well consider asking to be transferred to a different one once my results are in..hopefully all will be ok and I can put all this behind me, but if not I’m not sure I have much trust in the current hospital to continue any treatment there x

Hi. You could try this link Ask a Nurse page (click on the green text to open up the nurse page)

And you'll be taken to this page

Press on Ask a question and you will be taken to a new page which looks like this

You need to fill in the subject line, your questions and press send, just the way you started this thread.

If you are still having problems the telephone support line number is 0808 808 0000 and it's manned between 8 am and 8 pm every day of the week and you ask to speak with one of the nurses.

Hope this helps you find the information you need.

  • I hope that the consultant can get things moving for you, you are always entitled to ask for a second opinion at another hospital but at this stage it might slow things down again. Have you had a pre op appointment for your general anaesthetic? They gave me one and I think I had to formally consent to having it.
