Hi, I'm 40years old with one child (17) and have recently been diagnosed with atypical hyperplasia. The biopsy showed a 'few foci suspicious for endometrial carcinoma' and have been advised to have a hysterectomy. I had never ruled out having more children but do not currently have a partner and also have PCOS which would make it difficult anyway. I'm confused about whether going down the route of getting the mirena coil and waiting to see if things improve if i'm not actively trying to get pregnant right now. Is it worth waiting if there is a chance i meet someone and want to have more kids?
It's your decision to make, what is is right for you may not be right for someone else, personally I would have the hysterectomy but that is because I have high grade endometrial cancer and it is very scary, this is only my opinion, as I say it's a personal decision. If I could go back 10 years I would have had it done to avoid what I am going through g through now. Talk to your medical team it may help.
It's a minefield right now. If i have the hysterectomy and they find no cancer present will i feel like i should have tried the other option. If i don't and try the other method, there no saying how long it would be until i find a partner and decide to have a child and if its even a possibility anyway. I have an appt tomorrow so will discuss these concerns. It's just a hard decision!
Sorry I re read it yes they have done the biopsy, I am 61 ( a young 61) I never thought I would get this diagnosis, we all feel invincible when we are younger don't we, I think you need to discuss it more and think about the likelihood of it developing they should have some good advice for you. My experience was no symptoms at all then end of May I had post menopause tiny bleed with pinkish discharge for a day or two then it stopped, I went immediately and after a biopsy I was told I have grade 3 endometrial cancer, i wish i could go back and have a hysterectomy, but that is me, i am older than you, i have to have a complete hysterectomy next week and radiation to follow, then decide what is next. I am sure the staff on this site will have some info and offer you support as they are wonderful. Wishing you all the best x
Sorry to hear your diagnosis but glad you are getting treatment for it. I didn’t think anything of my symptoms and very rarely go to the doctor so I’m glad I did this time. Spoke to my consultant today and was told I could have another biopsy to confirm the ‘suspicious cells’ so maybe that will help with the decision. Good luck next week!
Hi, Atypical Hyperplasia is not cancer as such - but you have been told that there are some suspicious cells, so it makes sense maybe to have another biopsy before you make your mind up. I am a lot older than and post menopausal but opted for the mirena coil anyway, for other reasons. I've had it for almost 2 years now and had grade 1 stage 1 endomtrial cancer - but was given the all-clear in January this year, so the treatment can work.
Some younger women who want to have more kids try the method to allow them to complete their family before they have a hysterectomy, during which time they may also lose weight too, which helps. It doesn't suit everyone but many women go on to have more children this way. It's not without its issues though and firstly, there is generally some bleeding whilst the womb lining thins down. I found the whole process OK and am now cancer-free, even though I had early stage cancer 2 years ago. However, it's your decision to make but it seem that the starting point is to confirm whether or not you even have cancer - but even if you do, so long as it's early-stage and grade, it is still possible to have the treatment in many cases. I would therefore take a step back whilst you gather all the information from your medical team before taking what will be an important decision.
Make a list of questions and the Macmillan Nurses on here are very good to chat to as well. Good luck!
I have PCOS too - and had a child at 40. It was a difficult birth and while being a parent at nearly 41 was manageable having a teenager when menopausal was no fun at all. I would not recommend trying to get pregnant after 40. You'll know that the risk of miscarriage is higher in your 40s, and it's higher than normal in PCOS anyway.
Some women find the idea that their child bearing years are over very difficult. I suggest accepting it and having the hysterectomy. If they find cancerous cells how would you feel thinking you might you child's graduation (hopefully), their first job, their marriage, their children?
Even if cancerous cells are found, this is a very treatable cancer, particularly if found early or someone has low grade cancer....
