Operation Date

I've just been given my operation date. 22nd September at 7.30 in the morning, for a robotic assisted hysterectomy. I started having symptoms in April, so it's been a long stressful wait. I'm relieved to finally have a date, but scared about the whole procedure. Any tips for preparing for the day? Thanks

  • I had robotic surgery beginning of August, nearly 4 weeks post op and walking about, driving short distances, returning to normal life. Remain active and eat healthy before surgery. Make sure you are not constipated prior to surgery and I ate less the day before. I had surgery at lunch time and my husband picked me up by 7 pm. I found bladder and bowel function difficult 1st few days. Make sure you have pads and are given laxatives and 4 week heparin injections prior to discharge. I felt recovery from an emergency C section easier, but then you are more distracted.

    Good luck!

  • I have mine on 27th September so I will let you know how it goes. Yes it's very stressful waiting isn't it, how are you feeling? I would like mine over and done with now.

  • Waiting was very stressfull.I really pushed the consultant when I finally saw him..so I got operated on the following week, thereafter 3 weeks to MDT and results. Got really lucky..was downgraded to 1a, no further treatment, will get a phone call in 6 weeks from the nurse..no exam.. now feeling deflayed/tired

  • Thanks, I hope all goes well for you. I'm feeling relieved to get a date as the lab took nearly ten weeks to come back with my results. I've been really worried about it spreading. I'm totally dreading it, but I'm  hoping that I will make a quick recovery. I know everyone is different, but several ladies on here seem to have coped really well and not had lot of pain afterwards. I've noticed that for the last week or so I've been so tired. I don't know if this is because of the cancer or if it's just a result of all the stress. How are you coping? I'm trying to read or listen to audio books a lot as this switches my mind off.

  • Thanks for all the advice. Did you have the option to stay in overnight? It seems a lot to cope with,  going home the same day. Were you sent home with a catheter? I'm not looking forward to the injections, I struggled with doing them for one week after my hysteroscopy.

  • You would think they would do another scan after a few months or something to give us some peace of mind

  • Yes I have been very tired too, had an afternoon nap some days which is unlike me, it may be the constant stress though. I have some upper leg pain too which doesn't seem to concern the clinical nurse or my GP when I went to see her, again it may be from tense muscles I guess. Mine is a grade 3 they said after biopsy so I have been very paranoid about it spreading, I just want it out, I was transferred to a different hospital as they specialised in this type of surgery and radiotherapy.

  • For what it’s worth, I didn’t need even one pad or panty liner post op. I had taken a pack in with me, but had absolutely no blood or discharge post op. I also found the recovery far easier than from my c section in 1989, I think mainly because the hysterectomy incisions were so small and healed more quickly.

  • Excellent that you now have a date! What is it about the procedure that scares you? I found that planning my packing list and making some special purchases helped me feel a bit more in control and was a helpful thing to focus on. Have you thought of how you will get to and from the hospital? Do you have a suitcase with wheels? Would you like suggestions of things to take, presuming you’ll be staying overnight?

  • Thanks, yes im hoping to be staying overnight as it's about a 40 minute drive. I suppose I'm worried that things could go wrong. The hospital where I'm having the procedure has very bad memories for me, as I spent weeks there visiting my mum before she died, and some major mistakes were made with her care. I'm having a rough couple of days and feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment, definitely not like me. As I'm on the urgent list, the hospital rang yesterday and offered me a cancellation for next week, but then rang back and said it wouldn't be possible as there wouldn't be enough time for me to have a second blood test and for the blood to be ordered. So that's totally thrown me, and now I'm back to my original date of the 22nd.
