Hysterectomy recovery

I had a robotic hysterectomy 7 days ago: womb, cervix, tubes and ovaries. I'd been diagnosed with grade 3 cancer of the womb. Thankfully, the Sentinel procedure didn't show a spread into the lymph though they have taken a couple to biopsy.

I'm recovering well and have very little pain. It was fully keyhole and those are healing well too.

I'm not trying to do too much and listening to my body but I keep thinking about what's going on inside. I worry that if I want to cough or forget and try to do something I shouldn't that I'm going to cause problems, particularly with the vaginal cuff and it's stitches.

I know it takes a longer to heal inside and the surgeon would have done a good job to secure the closure to withstand a cough or two but does anyone else share these concerns. It makes me feel a bit squeamish.

  • Hello

i had open (vertical incision) surgery for Grade 3 cancer on 31st October.
The  CNS gave me a little cushion to press against my scar and this went with me everywhere for the 1st month. I also used this when travelling in car under my seat belt.

The cushion gave me a sense of security so could physically hold myself together. I was only stuck together on the outer scar but my little cushion gave me that sense of security in case of sneezing or coughing.

  • Thanks, I hope you're recovering well now.

I'm more concerned about the vaginal cuff inside. Because I have very little pain I don't want to overdo things or sneeze/cough that it damages the closure.

I guess it must be quite robust but probably just want some reassurance

  • Coughing is important as it helps to clear the anaesthetic from the lungs! Nothing wrong with coughing! All I was aware of post surgery was being advised not to  lift anything heavier than a mug of tea for the first few weeks. It was probably a bit easier for me as I had abdominal surgery in 1989 when I had a c section with my first child, so I was used to the recovery. What sort of things are you thinking might be things you shouldn’t do?

  • Well I do live on my own so have to feed myself and the cat. I am fairly fit and active and use the strength in my legs and arms a lot but I do have to use the cooker, get stuff out of the freezer etc.

I wasn't given any advice about how much I could lift but am being sensible.

Even though I am well within the menopause, I am having some hormone disruption and think that is what is putting the anxiety about this in my head.

I just need some reassurance that the internal surgery is robust.

    Thanks for your response
