So, where to start. I had the surgery at the start of March. Initially all was good. I had zero pain and was let out the following day. However, just over 2 weeks later I had a major haemorrhage all over the clinic floor. They estimated I lost something north of 2.5 litres of blood. The consultant spent nearly an hour trying to stop the bleeding but I ended up being rushed into emergency surgery with my husband being told it could be a close thing. Luckily they stitched me up and I went home after 2 days Turns out an infection had stopped the healing and my blood wouldn't clot!
But it is 2xmonths later and I am fine. Full recovery and clean bill of health from my consultant so no further treatment needed. That is a relief I can tell you!!
Yes, seems a long time ago now. I don't understand why you aren't routinely given anti-bs after major surgery. I am sure the cost of the extra surgery (not to mention the clean up and massive amounts of packing and silver nitrate used) would be more!
At my hospital they give prophylactic antibiotics immediately post surgery. I know this because when I saw my consultant a few weeks before my op, and he asked me about allergies, I told him I’d reacted badly previously to metronidazole (an antibiotic). He replied that it was just as well that I’d told him as that was one of the antibiotics they gave routinely post op while still on the operating table, and that he’d put it in my notes for me to be given something else instead.
