I’ve (29) taken my mum (61) recently to an mri she had a biopsy where they told her she had lots of growths in there and that it was red and raw as well. I took her to that she was bleeding very heavily after it probably as a result of the biopsy. It’s confirmed to be cancer but obviously the mri is to show what stage
she doesn’t want to contact MacMillan or anything like that.
I live 2h 30 min drive away from her and I’ve been taking her to all her appointments she has family near by literally 2 mins drive but none of them want to help and have actually all unfriendly her from Facebook. Which I can’t believe really Unfortunately I have a mileage problem I’m on finance and can only do 10k and have only 1k left and 3 months before it can reset
.
she has no one but me and the transport is a massive issue she’s a very large individual and she struggles to even get in my car and she’s in so much pain bless her I have to help her put her legs in. She’s got agoraphobia so it’s so hard to be able to even get her transport she needs to trust someone. I’m rather concerned about her feet the veins have gotten quite dark as they were more red before but she has very swollen calves and feet as well I wonder if anyone else has experienced that?. I have called the gp and I’m taking her for a blood test today.
she hears her results from the MRI on Tuesday they reckon.
I'm not really sure what I can do because I can’t travel to help her anymore I’ve been staying with her for a few weeks to help her out and she’s got no one else. Any advice the stress is going high as I can’t figure out what to do and she’s very scared and needs emotional support as well.
Hi Jamessg
Welcome to the Womb group.
I am sorry to hear that Mum has been diagnosed with womb cancer. I understand that it is a worrying time for you and it is good that you are thinking about the practical things as well as supporting mum.
The staging MRI would be the normal thing to happen and once the results are back she will likely be given an appointment to discuss treatment. For most ladies it tends to be a hysterectomy, where it is medically possible. As she is a larger lady and has other medical things going on it may be that alternative treatment may be offered. For some ladies on here who do have other medical things going on treatment may begin with a hormone coil for instance. Endometrial cancer is normally a very treatable cancer.
When she has the appointment to discuss treatment she should be introduced to a cancer nurse specialist who will be her first port of call during treatment. I was assigned a CNS but also had a specific Macmillan Support Worker. It is worth talking to either about hospital transport. Due to what you have said about Mum's general health/mobility she should qualify for free hospital transport. They would pick her up from home and bring her home after treatment. Her CNS will be also able to offer emotional support as it is naturally a scary time for Mum.
You have done the right thing in contacting her GP about her swollen legs/veins. if at anytime you are concerned and you are unable to get through to her GP, remember you can always give NHS 111 a call.
We do have the Macmillan Support Line available from 8am-8pm daily if you need to talk to someone. They can also have a look to see if there is any local support available for Mum (and you) It maybe that Mum is not yet ready to contact Macmillan herself but she is welcome to pop on and have a look around the site if it would help. At the moment I understand that she has a lot going on and it can all feel a bit in limbo and overwhelming. At the moment she has had a diagnosis but has not yet had her provisional stage/grade and it is this that will help the doctors come up with a treatment plan.
I am sorry that Mum is going through this and I am sure that the support that you are giving her is really helping. Perhaps when her treatment plan is finalised and the practical arrangements are supported, things will feel a bit better for you both.
We are here for you both and please do ask if there is anything you need to know.
Jane
Hi, sorry to hear about you mum. With regard to the transport issues: do you have a 'LINK' service near you that you could access? They may have someone with a larger vehicle to help with the transport and generally you contribute what you can afford to the cost of each journey. I would make enquiries, as this may help both with the type of vehicle and the ongoing expense. Good luck.
"Patient transport is no longer booked by West Suffolk Hospital unless you are an in-patient already in hospital needing transport home. If you require transport please call the number for the Ambulance Trust below. You will be asked a series of questions to determine whether or not you are eligible for free transport. Transport booking line: 0845 8500774."
Am not sure if this is the area for your Mum but if it is there is a number here to call.
If you go to the website of the hospital Mum has been attending may be a section called something like " getting here" - it will have details for driving, public transport etc but if you scroll down there will be an option for hospital transport.
Alternatively you could contact her doctor surgery to see what is available. In my area there was one number to call but transport was provided by the Red Cross. There were also volunteer drivers. For people who are not eligible for the free transport in my area there are community cars/mini buses that will offer the service for a subsidised cost.
Have you tried calling the support line here, as they may have details of people that could help. When I was trying to get to hospital for radiotherapy when I was feeling particularly crap, I was pointed in the direction of council that offered subsidised transport for people attending medical appts. Will admit it was difficult finding out about such services. Hope you manage to find something.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
