I’ve got endometriod endometrial adenocarcinoma, grade 2, diagnosed on 22/4/26. I’m awaiting MRI then surgical plan (which will be hysterectomy).
At my first gynaecology appointment on 2/4/26 biopsies were taken and I also had a Mirena coil fitted to help with womb lining (22mm and bleeding constantly).
When consultant phoned with my diagnosis of cancer on 22/4/26 he prescribed Megace as I was still bleeding (still am but not as bad as before coil and more like a brown discharge than blood now).
It is likely I will be scanned and have surgery within the next 6-8 weeks.
Megace looks like a drug with lots of horrible, and very common, side effects. It also says it can take several weeks to be effective. My dilemma is should I start taking it when surgery will be scheduled soon? Does anyone else have any experience of taking it along with having a mirena coil while awaiting surgery? Other than cancer I’m fit and healthy (in my 50’s).
Hello
Welcome to the Womb group.
I am sorry to hear of your diagnosis of cancer and I remember what a worrying time it was when I had my own diagnosis.
I am sorry that you are still having some bleeding. The mirena coil and megace are both types of synthetic progesterone. Both can have side effects but it sounds like hopefully you will not have to be on them long.
I would not advise not taking it, it the consultant has prescribed it- however if you are concerned are you able to contact them to discuss it further?
I remember before chemo looking at the potential side effects and there were many- however I remember being told to think about the leaflet in a packet of paracetamol- they have to tell you all the possible side effects so that you can make an informed choice about using them- however for most people they may only have a few if any. I wonder if it is the same with megace?
Alternatively perhaps give the Macmillan Support Line a call and talk to one of the nurses.
Jane
Thankyou Jane. I’ve taken your advice and phone my named cancer nurse today to talk more about it. I’d already spoken to her on Monday and didn’t want to bother her again, but she couldn’t have been more patient and kind.️
I'm glad that you have been able to talk to your nurse again and hope that it helped.
