Have had a Mirena coil now for 18 months for what is believed to be stage one (endometrial cancer.). I had bleeding onn and off for several months and rare bleed during last year. Is it normal to get bleeds after several months. They are not heavy and nurse doesn't seem to think it is anything.  If it gets heavy, they say they will  put a second coil in place. Is this usual. I am feeling worrried as I wll not be given any MRI scans or surgical treatment because of my heart issues and pacemaker.

  • HI, I also have a mirena coil for almost as long as you - and yes, I believe it's fairly normal to get breakthrough bleeding whilst on the coil, for whatever reason you have it filled. Even women who use it for contraception purposes have breakththough bleeding from time to time so I don't think the time you have it in is that relevant. It just seems to go with the territory. Having said that however, IF bleeding is heavy or comes with other symptoms like pain, it might be a good idea to talk to your GP at least and go from there. I had bleeding on and off for about 4 months - but still got the occasional bleed months after that. These days I only get tiny spotting every few months - and I've been given the all-clear from cancer recently! I don't know about having a second coil in place - that sounds odd but you need to liaise with your medical team on that. There are hormone tablets as well that can treat this condition - Provera I think they are called so perhaps you could discuss this with your doctor?

About the lack of MRI scans or surgical treatment as you have a pacemaker: Surely this shouldn't stop you from having a basic ultrasound? But again, discuss with your GP. Also, are you having regular biopsies to check the lining? There is always some form of monitoring to ensure that things are going well and you need to clarify exactly what that is going to be because you and your team need to know whether the treatment is working or not. Sending good wishes!

  • Lolabear, ultrasounds are contraindicated for people with pacemakers

  • Hi Redren

I am sorry to hear that you are having some bleeding whilst being treated with the mirena coil.

It sounds like your nurse is not too concerned at the moment as the bleeding is not too heavy which is a good sign. It also sounds like there is a possible back up plan if needed- with the second coil.

Why not give the Support Line a call tomorrow and speak to one of the nurses. They would be able to explain how having a second coil would help treat the cancer.

I hope the bleeding settles for you.

    Jane

  • Thanks for that. It's something that I wasn't aware of, that's why I suggested the poster consult their GP...

  • Thanks, that is reassuring.

I had one ultra sound to check it was still there. No biopsies or checkups since the original one. I just get a phone call from the nurse every 3-6 months.  So I do feel a bit lost sometimes.

They don't want me to have any general anaethetics, biopsy ws done with a low dose spinal block with no problems.
