Update diagnosis and treatment

I just want to post a quick update which I hope will help any ladies who are undergoing tests or recently diagnosed. I was diagnosed with low grade, provisional stage 1a at the beginning of February and immediately scheduled for a keyhole hysterectomy and BOC just over two weeks later. Unfortunately during surgery they had to convert to an abdominal but I was up and about the following day and only stayed in hospital for two nights, recovery is going well, not without challenges and still a way to go until full recovery but after only five weeks since diagnosis I have had a full check over by my surgeon, my staging confirmed as 1a and no further treatment required I am cancer free. It is an example of the NHS at its very best. I have not yet had time to fully absorb my diagnosis let alone that I am now cancer free, it may not hit me for some time so for now I will concentrate on my recovery and probably process it some time in the months to come. I know I am lucky not everyone gets such a treatable prognosis but just wanted to share a positive story. I will always be grateful for the amazing treatment and care I have received.

  • That’s brilliant news Tess and thank you for popping back to share it with us!

  • Hi Tess

    That's great news.

It can take time to process it all and I remember that a lot of the processing didn't start for me until treatment was complete. It can help to talk things through and if you need us we are here. Some people find a life after cancer course helpful. I did the Macmillan Hope course and found it helpful- all online too.

I wish you well for your continued recovery, take things day by day and give yourself time.

  • That is really lovely to read.  I have been very recently diagnosed and having my surgery on Monday.  Unfortunately I am not coping with all of this.  I am so scared and the tears will not stop.  However, you said here that you are cancer free which is fabulous.  Did they take out your lymph nodes?  If so, how long did it take to come back to say the cancer hadn't spread?

  • Sorry to read about your diagnosis and that you are struggling. No they didn’t remove my lymph nodes (well not that I am aware of). I had an MRI even before histology confirmed a cancer diagnosis and my consultant was optimistic it had been caught really early and was low grade. My initial histology and MRI results took three weeks and my final staging post hysterectomy took just over two weeks. It is natural to find it overwhelming I found it triggered lots of emotions in me as my husband only lost his own battle with cancer two years ago. I hope you have someone you can talk to, sending you love and support, hope surgery goes well and that you’re not waiting too long for your results. Take care of yourself xx
