Hi everyone
I’m looking for some advice or shared experiences.. I am 39 years of age.
I’ve been spotting for over 5 weeks while taking Provera 20mg, and each week the bleeding has gradually become heavier. I assumed this was a normal side effect.
However today it has turned into a full heavy bleed with clots and strong cramping, similar to a period, and I feel quite worried.
I am due to have the coil fitted this Friday as part of treatment.
I wanted to ask:
• Has anyone experienced a heavy bleed like this after weeks of spotting on Provera?
• Does this mean the medication isn’t working?
• Can the coil still be fitted if a full bleed has started?
• When should clot size or bleeding become a concern?
I have contacted my consultant but would really appreciate hearing others’ experiences while I wait.
Thank you so much
Hi
I am sorry to hear that you have had spotting and then a unexpected heavy bleed while on provera.
You have done the right thing in contacting your consultant and hopefully you have now had some reassurance.
With heavy bleeding/ clots my CNS said that anything that needs a pad changing within an hour, soaks through a pad- is considered needing immediate checking- and would be considered a haemorrhage. With clots anything more that 2 1/2 cm needed reviewing, particularly if accompanied by pain and if they are prolonged. I presented at A&E with palm sized clots and was told it was the right thing to do.
So with the symptoms you had- heavy bleeding that was unexpected, pain and cramps I would have contacted my GP/ called NHS 111 or as you have done- contacted the consultant.

Sorry to hear you are suffering this. The coil may well stop or reduce the bleeding over time - but will shed excess womb lining, which is good. Some women have the coil to stop excessive bleeding and it can work well for treating hyperplasia too. I would consult your GP or team about the heavy bleeding though just in case.
