Bowel investigations following radical hysterectomy

I wonder if anyone has any information for me.  I had a radical robotic hysterectomy 2 weeks ago and am recovering well.  When I had my ct scan prior to the treatment it highlighted a possible issue with my bowel.  I will need some radiotherapy sessions once I have healed sufficiently but also have now had an appointment with the hospital to go and have a colposcony appointment in 6 weeks.  If I need further surgery what will take priority, surgery or radiotherapy?  Thanks if anyone has been through this and has any info

  • Hi Rowntrees

I am pleased to hear that you are recovering ok from your surgery.

I am sorry to hear that there is a possible issue with your bowel that needs some further investigation. Have you had your post op results yet? I would imagine it would be those that would partly decide what takes priority.

I had adjuvant treatment after my hysterectomy and although I had the consents appointments through fairly soon any further treatment was not scheduled until 6 weeks post surgery to allow time for healing. I had chemo next and then there was also around 4 weeks from the date of my last chemo for radiotherapy to start. It will also likely depend on what the issue is with your bowel, how urgent it is and whether it could be affected by the radiotherapy treatments.

Timings can vary with hospitals but before radiotherapy you normally have a planning scan and once they have this it can take 2/3 weeks for the treatment to be planned and the first treatment to be booked in. It may well be that by the time this has been done, your colonoscopy may have been done.

Probably the best person to ask is your CNS/consultant.
