Biopsy results wait

Hi I’m new here I had a hyteroscopy and biopsy done 2 weeks ago on a  2 week wait urgent cancer referral. I am so anxious waiting for the results. When I had the hyteroscopy I was in so much pain I don’t remember how long they said for the results but when I goggles it said results are usually back in 1-2 weeks on the 2 week wait. Would anyone mind sharing how long they waited for results it’s been 2 weeks today and the wait is causing me to have so much anxiety I can’t function

  • I recently had a biopsy (in a different place) and it took 3 weeks to get a call to offer me an appointment with my consultant, which was another 4 days after that..

BUT, I would say, don't just sit there and wait, call them.. if you don't have a number, call your GP and ask for a number to contact..  last year I had an MRI and was told it would take 2 weeks for the results to come through, 10 weeks later I was still waiting.. I honestly thought, "no news is good news" but by then I was fed up waiting.. so I called (twice!) to chase them.. and thank god I did.. after the second chase I got called back within a couple of days with an appointment  with the consultant, and she was absolutely appalled that I had waiting (by then, 3 months!!!)..  so, don't be "polite" and "understanding" like I was... phone them , because sometimes we get a bit lost in the system! A gentle nudge can move things along for you.

  • Hi Nel89

    Welcome to the group.

I am sorry to hear that you are feeling anxious waiting for the results from your hysteroscopy.

My biopsy results took around a week and my post op results took around 3 1/2 weeks. Same hospital, same lab.

There does seem to be a variation between hospitals and it depends on how busy the lab is. It can also depend on how you chose to receive the results. I opted to have mine by phone as I felt that was the quickest way.

The best thing to do is to perhaps give them a call and ask whether there is any news yet. You could also contact your GP to see if anything they can do to chase things up.

In my own experience and through being on here the length of time taken to receive the results doesn't have any baring on the results- its simply down to how busy the hospital lab is.

I understand how hard it is to wait. Do give the Support Line a call if it would help to talk to someone.

  • My consultant said 2 weeks so when it was 2 weeks to the day I phoned his secretary and asked if I was likely to hear soon. I suggest you do likewise!

  • I had a frustrating 9 week wait - I was told I would receive results in 2 weeks. I ended up calling my consultant's secretary directly, she was able to share the results over the phone. Waiting can be so awful so feel free to chase up!

  • Hi Nel89, I had biopsy during a hysteroscopy and it was about 5 weeks before I was given my diagnosis. This was following me chasing it up with both my GP and the hospital.
I agree with others below I would chase it.
In the meantime please use the McMillan helpline, I called them a lot whilst waiting for biopsy results and also then waiting for CT and mRI results. They were a massive help, it can be a very anxious time, but there is lots of support.

  • Hi Nel89. I got my results 18 days after my biopsy. Like others suggested, I would chase it up with the hospital or GP.

  • Thank you so much for all of your reply’s and advice I really appreciate it. I’m finding the wait really difficult and letting anxiety get the better of meal I’m hoping to get an answer soon. I have taken the advice and tried to chase today before the weekend but had no luck. The gp told me to contact the place I had the biopsy and they told me they don’t receive the results and they will come directly to me or my GP so I am unsure who to contact to chase the results. I have checked my hospital letter and there is no name of the consultant so I think I will just have to wait and hope I get an answer soon.

  • Speak to your practice nurse and/or team who are treating you while you are waiting for your results.

  • Do you have a practice nurse and/or the secretary of the consultant contact details at the hospital where you were treated? If not, go through main phone number until you get to the right dept.
