Hi, I had a Mirena fitted a month ago for atypical hyperplasia. After some advice from others that have had a coil fitted and may be able to help with my problem. I’ve been bleeding for the last 18 days and can’t see an end to that, my nurse says this is normal, I thought I was going to get spotting not having to use sanitary products. I think I can deal with this, my biggest concern is the pain. I had the strings cut last week as I was getting stabbed, rubbed and generally felt sore every day.
The shortening of the strings has stopped me from being stabbed, but I still feel sore internally. Has anyone ever had this and got a solution from the doctors.
Seeing that this should be in place for a number of years, I need to be comfortable and need to identify a reason and possible solution.
Any help appreciated.
I had a coil fitted recently for the same reason. I had some spotting that day and the next, nothing since. I have had some cramps and back pain and I couldnt keep my eyes open the next morning so went back to bed. The strings are not bothering me, but the nurse did cut them to 3cm when it was put in. I was given a calendar to mark any bleeding. But I was taking progesterone tablets for 2 weeks before.
The progesterone in the coil stops the womb lining from thickening so I guess if your lining was very thick that might cause some bleeding for a while but I'd be taking my temperature often to check it wasnt an infection.
I think there can be quite a lot of variation in how people get on with the coil. You can take tablets instead, although it's a higher dose of levonorgestrel and again the first time I took it I slept very soundly, you take it at night as that's a known side effect.
As its Christmas unless you think it's an infection they'll probably tell you to try it a bit longer as side effects are often temporary. Or you could try and get an appointment to have it removed and try the tablets instead. That might have to be post Christmas. My nurse was kind of encouraging me not to have treatment at all - only 5% risk of developing cancer in the next 20 years - and that could also be an option especially if you are overweight and potentially able to lose weight.
I’ve been on progesterone tablets since the beginning of November and am still on them as the consultant wanted me to take them for a month after the coil fitting in case it fell it. I wish the tablets helped me sleep, no affect there.
i had a cm cut off the strings but i think because i have a prolapse they are rubbing across the prolapsed part of my cervix. I think it might be another trip to get them cut again.
Hi, I posted elsewhere about the same but the coil can take time to settle in. I had bleeding for 3 months on and off and still get a little spotting from time to time but other than that, things have settled well. I've had the coil for over a year now and very few issues - so hang in there and unless you are in a lot of pain or have other issues, mostly things do calm down after a while but it's different for everyone.
It sounds as though you may need an examination to check the strings etc...so contact your team to get this done as you need to be comfortable. Good luck!
