Confused on treatment

I’ve been diagnosed with atypical hyperplasia at the upper end of the scale with a small focal point of abnormal cells.  After an MRI they have staged it at 1 1a (at the most).  I am not peri or menopausal. They wanted to do a hysterectomy but we are trying progesterone tablets and I had a coil fitted about a month ago.
I’ve been on progesterone tablets since the beginning of November when diagnosed and am due to stop the tablets on Monday with the aim of letting the coil do it job, however I’ve been bleeding for the last 16 days. My nurse has suggested I continue with the tablets and give the coil time to settle in, but I’m wondering if it’s better to stop the tablets and clear out my womb.  I’m struggling to get hold of my nurse to understand whether I continue or stop the tablets.  Has anyone been in a similar situation?

  • Hi Cherry

I am sorry to hear that a small amount of abnormal cells were found during your diagnosis of atypical hyperplasia. Atypical hyperplasia can be seen as a pre cancer condition that may in time become cancer. It sounds like this has happened in a small focal point and that is why they initially offered a hysterectomy.

For ladies with a low stage and low grade cancer then the hormonal treatment that you have been on can sometimes be used.

I would not advise you stop taking your medication without speaking to your consultant/nurse. I would be concerned that you would potentially risk more areas developing. If you can not get hold of your nurse over the weekend, I would suggest contacting your GP for advice on Monday as to whether to continue or to stop.

  • So my nurse has just rung me back. They are doing a prescription until my next biopsy in February, they are seeing this bleeding as a good sign that the thicken lining is being shed, so hopefully the February biopsy will be more normal but not completely.

I’m just a bit annoyed that I had a coil, still have to take the tablets and have bleeding like a period - might be anemic by feb.

  • Am glad that they called you back. I did wonder whether the bleeding was a good sign as it means the endometrium is thinning. From my understanding it can take a while for things to settle. Perhaps ask for a blood test to check things out if the bleeding is prolonged.

  • HI, I have had a coil in for over a year now but during the first 3 months I bled on and off and was told that it's the lining shedding, which is good. My last biopsy showed almost complete reversal....hang in there.

  • If you are worried about anemia you can always have a blood test via your GP or hospital team. I take something called 'gentle iron' as recommended by my GP and it seems to help but always check with your team first...

  • Thanks for all your help. It’s nice to speak to someone who is going through something similar. I do have some gentle iron left as I’ve only just finished taking them for 3 months due to low ferritin (my number was 28).  Will speak to my GP about getting retested in the New Year as they wanted another blood test after I’d been on the iron tablets.

  • You are welcome! It is possible for the condition to be reversed with hormone treatment for early stage cancer or hyperplasia but you would need to be monitored regularly in any event. Good luck with the treatment and HAPPY NEW YEAR!
