Hi. I had an appointment for endometrial biopsy results today and was told I have cancer. Im completely floored.  Mri will be in the next couole of wks. I am home now wondering if they can tell from the biopsy I do have cancer for sure does that mean its v bad?

  • Hi Ma80

    Welcome to the womb group.

I am sorry that the endometrial biopsy showed that you have cancer. I understand that this can feel a shock and is a worrying time.

Yes, the biopsy is what shows that there is cancer present. The biopsy takes some samples from the lining of the womb and these are checked to see if there are any cancer cells present.

When cancer cells are found the next routine step is to be sent for a scan. Some people have a CT, some have an MRI and some have both. They are doing this to check exactly where the cancer is in the body.

From the biopsy they can give you a provisional grade and from the MRI it will give a provisional stage.

Once your scan is done, all your results will be discussed at a multi disciplinary team meeting and they work out the most effective treatment for you. You will then likely be given an appointment to come in to discuss what happens next. For most ladies, where it is medically possible the first line of treatment is usually a hysterectomy. Sometimes there may need to be some follow up treatment.

I understand that it is a difficult time and if there is anything that you want to ask about, please do so. We also have the Macmillan Support Line available from 8am-8pm daily, if you feel that talking things through would help.

I hope that your scan can be done quickly and it brings clarification about what happens next.

    Jane

  • Thankyou jane, I just keep looking at my children. My youngest is only 2. Said in my app provisionally low grade biopsy but mri will have to be done.

  • Low grade is the best grade. Less likely to have spread and less aggressive.

Endometrial cancer is a very treatable cancer so hold on to that. The scan is always done as a next step and it is confirming the provisional stage.

It is tough to have a diagnosis and then to have to wait to find out the next steps, but hopefully the MRI will be done quickly.

  • Thankyou for taking the time with me. Im hanging onto the term "low grade" but paranoid she only said that to make me feel better. My hysterscopy the consultant had been so happy with everything looked healthy i waited 9 wks for results of biopsies which had me thinking all was ok. such a blow yesterday as symptoms go i only have had heavy periods but I always have. Every ache or itch I can remember im thinking the worst.

  • Low grade describes the type of cells identified in the biopsy.

If the consultant was happy that the endometrium looked healthy during the hysteroscopy this hopefully suggests that any cancer may be at an earlier stage. But it is the MRI which will provisionally confirm this.

Whilst for many women an episode of post menopausal bleeding is the sign that something is amiss, for others there may be more minimal symptoms such as a slight pink tinge when they wipe.

I remember every twinge etc fearing the worst and I remember being hyper aware of every sensation - however a big element for me was worry.

Endometrial cancer is normally a very treatable cancer.
