Hot flushes

I’m 65, so post menopausal, and had my radical hysterectomy last November and then my radio and chemo therapies from February to July.
These last couple of weeks I’ve had so many hot flushes it’s like I’m going through menopause all over again. I’ve had nothing up until now other than the normal treatment side effects.

Is it normal to experience menopause symptoms again and if so can I request HRT?

  • Hi Ep17

I go through phases when I get hot/ sweat since the chemo. It tends to be when it is hot weather or when I am more active. It is not something I particularly had before surgery and treatment. I do wonder whether there may be a connection to the chemo.

HRT is not normally given after womb cancer, particularly if the cancer was hormone positive. If you look at your post op results it normally would say oestrogen/progesterone positive if it is. The risk with HRT is that it could possibly lead to a recurrence in some ladies. However it is normally done on a risk vs benefit scenario and is an individual decision.

It maybe worth speaking to your CNS and/or GP as to whether it is a safe option for you and whether there is any alternative that may help. You could also give the Macmillan Support Line a call and speak to one of the nurses.

  • From what I recall mine isn’t hormone positive. I never thought about the actual chemo causing the flushing so I will certainly check with the medics and see what they suggest. Maybe it’s just another thing to put up with.

  • Worth checking.

I just noticed a change after treatment.
