Unclear Diagnosis

I have just joined the Forum and have found reading the chats helpful. Following a mass being found on ultrasound I had a hysteroscopy done & a biopsy taken that was undecided for abnormal cells. Then I had a Pelvic MRI. Last week I was told by telephone that it was "highly likely" that I have cancer of the womb. My results were discussed at the MDT this week & today I was told that they don't know if I have cancer or not. Treatment will be a Hysterectomy in first instance with Histology informing what is actually going on & any additional treatment indicated. However I have been referred for an urgent CT Scan to check for spread to the lungs. I am wondering if this is just a precaution incase it is cancer. Not sure if anyone else has been in a similar situation. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

  • Hello

    Welcome to the Womb group.

I am sorry to hear that a mass was discovered during your pelvic ultrasound and that they believe it highly likely to be cancer. When something is seen on an ultrasound then the next step is normally the hysteroscopy to take a closer look and then the biopsy to take some samples. It sounds like they believe that it is highly likely to be cancer from what they have seen on the scans and hysteroscopy but that the biopsy for some reason can not confirm for certain. This could be for different reasons.

With testing before surgery what they are trying to do is to get a provisional grade (type of cancer and how it behaves) and a stage (where it is in the body) This is all provisional until the post op results are looked at. The post op results are the ones that determine whether surgery alone is enough or whether any follow up treatment is advisable.

It is routine to be given a full CT scan (to include chest) and this is to stage any cancer and to rule out spread. I also had my CT scan before my diagnosis.

What I would expect now is for the CT to be done quickly- within the next week hopefully and then for the hospital to contact you and arrange for an appointment to come in and discuss everything. It sounds like you have had all the testing needed and also an MDT meeting so it would seem that it is now just the wait for the CT results.

I hope you do not have to wait too long for clarification but in the meantime do give the Support Line a call if talking things through would help.

  • Thanks Jane this is really helpful. All the waiting has been difficult. I think a face to face appointment will help me to understand what is happening. So far it has been brief telephone calls. Relieved to hear that CT scan is part of the usual process.
