I had 3 sessions of vaginal brachytherapy in July (following a hysterectomy). In the past couple of weeks I’ve had quite severe pain in my hips when sleeping on my side - enough to waken me up. My brachytherapy follow up appointment was with a radiographer, who said this happens with EBRT.
Has anyone experienced this with brachytherapy?
Hi I had 25 x external radio and 2 x brachy and had no pain afterwards whatsoever from either. To my understanding the brachy is a tiny targeted beam just directed at the top of the vaginal vault, and that possible side effects, if at all, would be very localised.
Hi Dolly3
I have not heard of this happening with brachytherapy. I had EBRT and do have some aching in my hips.
My suggestion would be to contact your CNS (don't wait for your next check up) and ask to be seen. You should not be having severe pain for any reason- without it being checked out.
Jane
Have you an email address for your hospital/CNS? My feeling would be to email them mentioning the pain and other symptoms. They may be able to move your appointment forward if they felt it was necessary or offer you an appointment with your CNS while you are waiting.
Thanks Jane. My hospital doesn’t give out e-mail addresses. I had left a voicemail for my CNS, but didn’t realise she was off with Covid. I now also have a bladder prolapse, with the added complexity of having to use dilators. This was confirmed at the internal examination by the radiographer at my brachytherapy follow-up appt. but no advice provided. Due to needing professional advice about this as well as the other things that are going on, I wrote to my gynaecologist. That’s how I got the appt. I will be so glad to have everything checked out.
I’ve also made an appt to see a pelvic floor therapist for some help and advice in managing the prolapse
You have been so helpful to me since my diagnosis. Thank you so much!
Hi Dolly3,
I had 25 EBRT and 2 Brachytherapy that finished in July. I began experiencing hip pain at night early September. The pain woke me up and I have been unable to sleep on my sides since. I had an MRI late September as I had other symptoms too. The MRI showed 2 things going on for me, but the one thing that related to my hip pain at night was osteoarthritis. The doctor at the hospital said that radiotherapy can exacerbate things like osteoarthritis. I don't know if this is what is going on with you, especially as you had Brachytherapy but not EBRT, but thought would mention it as our symptoms of not being to sleep on our sides due to severe pain are similar. I have been given painkillers to take at night to help me sleep through the pain. I hope you get some help for this soon too. It's exhausting to keep being woken at night by pain. Good Luck!
