Feeling empty inside

Hello Everyone

My name is Dawn, I was diagnosed with Endometrial Cancer in January this year, last Friday I underwent a successful total hysterectomy with both of my ovaries removed at the same time.

In the last couple of days I have developed a feeling of emptiness inside along with a feeling of only being half of a lady now, has anyone else experienced this?

  • Hi  what you are feeling is completely natural. I underwent a hysterectomy at the age of 39 due to endometrial stomal sarcoma. I am a mum to 3 beautiful daughters, and had no plans to further my family, but this made that final for me, and made it feel like my choice was taken away from me.
You have also had both ovaries removed, and your hormone levels would have plummeted. Your emotions will be all over the place because of this. Many women who have been through the menopause get this feeling that their “womanhood” is over, and many struggle coming to terms with this. During a surgical menopause everything is sped up to 100 miles an hour and you are thrown into full blown menopause overnight.
It is ok to mourn the life you are leaving behind. Yes your life will be different now, but you can still have a good life. Just remember it is OK to feel like this! X

  • Hi Dawn, I’m also a Dawn. I had my hysterectomy last September. I have been completely overwhelmed by the mix of emotions that come along with a cancer diagnosis  and major surgery. I’m on the forum currently to try to sort my feelings out now that I am over the physical recovery. There are so many adjustments to make mentally, being on here is a great way to work your way through things. I wish you well with everything.

  • Thank you soo much for your amazing message

  • Thank you soo much, I wish you well on your journey

  • Thank you. The doctors and medical teams are amazing they do such a great job, they fix the car after the crash to the best of their ability, but they don’t have the time or resources to fix the person who was driving the car. MacMillan do this, they are incredible. You can call them anytime however small you might think it is and they listen which is all you need sometimes.

  • Definitely i agree with you, Dawn, I owe soo much to Macmillan i will never be able to say thank you enough for their amazing work
