I am having an abdominal hysterectomy on 1 September. Feel very anxious regarding operation and recovery. I am stage 4 serous carcinoma. I have had 3 chemotherapy treatments so far. Currently I feel the best I have felt well before I was diagnosed. The chemotherapy has really helped me. Has anyone got some helpful hints/tips for me please? It seems most ladies have robotic/or keyhole surgery and recover well but that is not going to be possible for me as the surgeon said he needs to go in with an incision. I think it is standard for stage 4 from what I can tell.
Thank you.

Hi Mundesley
I am glad that the chemo has helped you.
I do understand having any sort of surgery can be a time of anxiety. Many ladies on here do seem to be offered keyhole surgery but there have also been several more recently that have had an abdominal hysterectomy for different reasons.
From my understanding the surgery is the same inside whichever way they gain access but with an abdominal incision it can take a little longer to recover. However with the abdominal incision the surgeon will be able to do a thorough job and have a thorough look around to remove what is needed.
I had chemo myself but after surgery and it may be that due to having it first that you may feel a little more tired.
This link will take you to previous posts by ladies who have had abdominal surgery. It might help to see their experiences. You can of course respond to any of these posts if you have questions.

Hi Mundsley
i had abdominal hysterectomy with the incision being vertical, and I recovered really well. I had 3 nights in hospital. The second day I felt a little out of sorts, think mainly due to lack of sleep and getting over GA, but still managed to shower myself. Third day I was up and about quite a bit of the day. Left hospital lunchtime on day 4, and from then on did really well. Was meant to go out for quick 5 min walk on day 5, which became 20 mins. Because of my stitches I actually found it more comfortable standing than sitting. What I did find was I could suddenly find myself tired, so rested up, as well as being active. I think key for me was do things, but also rest when you need to, and don’t lift heavy things. I had stitches removed around 11 days after op, and to start with was nervous not having the stitches, but this soon passed. I was back driving after about 3.5 weeks.
obviously everyone is different, but wishing you all the best.
Thank you. It’s good having support at a very stressful time x
Your experience sounds amazing insofar as abdominal hysterectomy is concerned I too will have vertical incision. Thank you I read with interest. It’s always good to hear something positive when you are approaching something with trepidation!
I do hope you are feeling well x
Thank you Jane your advice is very reassuring. It’s a very stressful time indeed but have got on extremely well with the chemo which has somewhat shocked me. It’s facing the op now I feel nervous about.
Hi I had an abdominal hysterectomy due to fibroids - incision was horizontal. Was in hospital for 2 nights and recovered really well. Staples removed after 10 days ( they were a bit uncomfortable by then!) and felt a lot better after that! I side sleep and used a pillow to support for first few days - really helped!
