Weight Gain on Chemotherapy

Anyone else experienced weight gain and a bloated tummy whilst going through Chemo. I’ve done 4 of 6 x3 weekly cycles so far and am at my biggest ever. It’s certainly not over indulging with food, I’ve even gone off all sweets, cakes, biscuits and chocolates. Thinking I will be fighting a losing battle going to Slimming World and wait till after my last chemo on 15th August. Then I have 5 weeks of external beam radiotherapy (does that affect weight gain too?).

  • Hi KeswickC

I didn't gain weight during chemo and actually lost on some cycles. I also lost weight during radiotherapy but most of it was temporary and due to the diarrhoea and restricted diet.

I did have bloating though chemo and an uncomfortable tummy. The bloating went during chemo.

I was told that during chemo to not be too concerned about small amounts of weight gained or lost and not to diet- I was told to wait until treatment ended but just try to eat healthily where possible but to just try to have anything that I fancied.

Don't forget also that during the chemo we can be given some high doses of steroids and these can have an affect on weight.

I would personally just have a chat with your CNS to make them aware of your worries but I am sure you will just be given some reassurance.

I wish you well for the rest of the treatments.

  • I gained a little bit during chemo, but I put it down to eating ginger snaps, mints, cake ( that friends brought) round, and a lot less exercise. Biscuits/cakes/sweets banned again in my house. Didn’t suffer from bloating during chemo, but am now.

During radio they want you to maintain weight, so everything the same before they zap you. I got weighed each week, and got told towards the end that I had lost too much, and to eat more cake. Got told by the radiographers that my body was doing equivalent of marathon each week, so needed the energy.

Well done for getting 4 out the way
