Vaginal vault brachytherapy planning

I had my pre-assessment yesterday for vaginal brachytherapy, which is due to take place next week. I hadn’t been given any prior guidance on the actual process. It was helpful to hear what would happen.

I had looked at a few NHS brachytherapy guides online, which mentioned a CT planning scan, which checks the fit of the applicator and enables dose to be adjusted to take account of other organs at risk. I liked the idea of that.

Apparently my centre doesn’t do the CT planning.  At my first visit the applicator will be inserted by a nurse and a standard dose given.

I wondered if it is common,or not,  to have CT scan to check size, dosage etc. prior to first brachy treatment?

  • Hi Dolly3

i had my brachytherapy last May.  I had a CT scan then a separate planning session where the size of  applicator was decided on and inserted, this was then checked by my oncologist. The next appointment I started the brachytherapy sessions, four in all. I did find the insertion of the applicator a little painful but bearable and had slight bleeding afterwards.  Since then I have had follow ups every three months with my oncologist and two CT scans. The follow ups have now moved to six monthly.

  • I had four sessions of brachytherapy at The Royal Marsden in Chelsea over nine years ago, following serous and clear cell womb cancer.  I did not have any planning scan. I am happy to report that I am well and healthy and will become a pensioner tomorrow!
    Best wishes to you all.

  • Lovely to hear good news

     Congratulations on becoming a pensioner!

  • So glad to hear that!

  • Hope all goes well for you too. How many days will you have between each treatment? Mine is Thursday, then the following Tuesday and Thursday, so three within a week.

  • Thank you. Tuesday and Thursday this week and Tuesday the following week. I'll be pleased when its all done but I know others have it far worse treatment wose
