I am 5 weeks post laparoscopic/vaginal total hysterectomy. I have had virtually no discharge post op but recently had a couple incidents of streaks of light pink discharge when wiping myself after going to the toilet.

This has only happened a couple of times and it’s only a few streaks  Today before it happened I had a bit of pain walking up an incline, so think it’s related to that.

I’m worried that there could be something wrong with my vaginal cuff healing and wondered if others have experienced this?

I’m still having some issues with an overactive bladder. Is this something others have found settled down through time?

Thanks

  • Hi Dolly3

I would suggest contacting your CNS- there should be a number to call on your hospital discharge paperwork.

Hopefully they will be able to give you some reassurance but it is best to mention it in case there is an issue with healing. Also mention about your overactive bladder- it may be they suggest a urine test to rule out any infection.

I hope it all settles soon.

  • Thanks Jane. I was checked for uti when bladder issue started a few weeks ago, which was clear. Saw consultant for pathology results on 4 June and she said bladder issue could still be within realms of post-op effects from 9 May.
My post-op results changed the stage of my endometrial cancer from 1a to 1b, greater than 50% myometrial invasion and focal LVSI. (My tumour was also greater than 5cm). There were no lymph nodes sampled, so that is an unknown although they looked ok on pre-op scans. Subsequently, I have been referred to see an oncologist this Wednesday, with a view to radiotherapy. Hence am very keen to ensure my cuff is ok before any potential brachytherapy. I don’t know if this would be checked routinely by oncology before brachytherapy is commenced? In the circumstances I would like to be reassured all is ok. Thanks for your answers to my questions, this is a whole new world for me.

  • I had external radiotherapy and had a planning scan before it started. I would think that the scan would show if there was an issue- however I would ask for a quick internal/speculum exam to view the cuff directly.

With LVSI radiotherapy tends to be offered- but it is the whole picture they look at including the grade of the cancer. The thing with LVSI is that they are so tiny that they are not seen on scans so adjuvant treatment tends to be given to mop up any stray cells.

I was 1b and had LVSI and had external radiotherapy and chemo. However there can be variations between hospitals. I did not have brachytherapy as no cancer cells were found in my cervix. I did ask the oncologist why and that was her explanation.

It can feel like it is a whole new world indeed- I remember all the medical terminology and didn't really have a clue about it at the time.

Good Luck for Wednesday. If it is recommended that you have the brachytherapy - it is normally well tolerated by most ladies on here.

  • I had radio and brachy, and I was checked internally at my planning mini CT for the brachy. It also took place towards the end of my 5 weeks of radio, and so was 4 months post op, plenty of time to have healed.
