How long after MDT meeting do you hear back?

My mum was diagnosed with serous endometrial cancer on 2nd May. It’s been a torturous wait to hear more information.

My mum was assigned a CNS but I was told she was on two weeks AL shortly after my mum’s diagnosis. I’ve called up this week assuming the AL would now be finished but was told it’s been extended three weeks, and told there’s no cover. This really stressed me out but Macmillan support line advised I contact the PALS at my mum’s hospital which I’ve done. Their phone number always goes voicemail but I’ve sent them an email raising my concerns so hoping to hear back from them.

I managed to get contact details of the medical secretary for my mum’s consultant who told me my mum would be discussed at the MDT meeting this Tuesday. We havent heard anything and the secretary advised I contact her if we hadn’t heard back by today which I have but she’s waiting to hear an update from the people who deal with the MDT meetings. I can sense my mum get more and more anxious. How soon after the MDT meeting do you usually get an appointment?

It’s really upsetting that my mum hasn’t been given any support since her diagnosis, and it doesn’t feel like there is any level of sensitivity / care towards her.

  • Hi

I'm sorry to hear about your frustration and obviously can't answer your question but I hope that you hear from them very soon.

  • Different hospitals may have different procedures, but for me the MDT meet first thing on a Friday morning, and I had first appointment after that at 10.30 am.  (Things had been dragging for me before then, as was asked to have a PET scan after MRI, results from PET were received Monday am, and that was when I was offered the first appt for the Friday).

one thing I did learn was they were not prepared to discuss anything with me until they had the results of everything back.

i really hope you hear something very soon

  • I had my hysteroscopy result by phone half an hour after that week’s MDT meeting, and then my scan results at a face to face appointment an hour after that week’s MDT (it had been prebooked for then). I think it all depends on how organised your hospital are. Even when I had my hysterectomy, they prebooked my results appointment for me for two weeks later for late morning of the MDT meeting day.

  • Thank you, I do feel like two days seems to be longer than I’ve heard but I don’t know if they’re waiting for my mum to receive biopsy results from a breast clinic appointment she had. If that’s the case, I wish they’d give us that context.

  • Thank you, your hospital seems much more organised than my mum’s one.

I’m already not impressed with the way they’ve handled the CNS situation cause I think having a point of contact that’d let us know what’s happening would make the process a lot less stressful. Just feels like we’re stuck in this limbo with no clear view of when things will start moving forward.

  • It does vary from hospital to hospital and I’m just fortunate that Southampton were very switched on in that respect. I hope you hear tomorrow

  • Yep, it is quite possible they are waiting for all results (which is why I said what I did), BUT totally agree with you if that is the case say so. Fingers crossed you manage to speak to someone tomorrow and get understanding of what is going on x

  • Hi Marmite,

Can you advise whether Southampton offer/provide pain relieft for biopsies?? I may have to change hospitals at some point and it's hard getting this information.

Currently I have pain relief by way of local anaesthetic and gas & air, which works as I am allergic to GA. Please advise if you know the answer to this - thanks!

  • Hi LolaBear, Mr.Sameer Umranikar was the gynaecological consultant at Southanpton who did my first hysteroscopy. I had a local anaesthetic injection and think I was offered gas and air too.
